Children Of Bodom, un gruppo che sul finire degli anni 90 faceva spaventosamente parlare di se, proponendo un genere assolutamente innovativo, energico, ma allo stesso tempo estremamente tecnico e d'impatto, nel 2005 sforna, dopo l'ottimo "Hate Crew Deathroll", il controverso "Are You Dead Yet?".
Disco che segna decisamente e soprattutto definitivamente un netto cambio di sound della band. Se già si avvertiva qualche accenno di sonorità diverse nel precedente album, esso era quasi impercettibile poichè sovrastato dall'impronta melodica che da sempre li ha contraddistinti, e che continuava a prevalere seppur in minor parte.
"Are You Dead Yet?" si presenta come un esperimento da parte della band di ricerca di un sound proprio e sempre nuovo, scelta assolutamente da non criticare, indipendentemente dalla qualità dell album stesso, dato che dopo 4 album che mantengono bene o male uno stile comune, è naturale (quasi doveroso alle volte) da parte dell'artista cercare costantemente di "innovare" il proprio stile.
E lo si evince subito fin dalla prima canzone, "Living Dead Beat", e addirittura, fin dai primi momenti della canzone, con una intro di tastiera mai sentita prima tra i capolavori dei Children Of Bodom ... una intro che colpisce soprattutto per il suo stile, abbandonando i vecchi canoni dei Children Of Bodom e orientandosi verso uno stile più "elettronico". Segue la title track, "Are You Dead Yet?", uno dei pezzi migliori dell album. La terza, "If You Want Peace Prepare For War" presenta un inizio non molto convincente, riscattandosi poi con una buona dose di pesantezza e melodia. "Punch Me I Bleed" sembra quasi la conferma che i Children Of Bodom di "Hatebreeder" non ci saranno più, ma se abituati a questo nuovo sound non è male.
"In Your Face" al contrario della precedente (almeno all'inizio) fa ben sperare a un "ritorno melodico", grazie alla sua accattivante intro, ma poi si uniforma allo stile delle altre canzoni... Molto riuscita comunque. Da un estremo ad un altro, "Next In Line" è sicuramente una delle meno riuscite dell'album. Mentre "BastardsOf Bodom", sembrerebbe la canzone con il peggior intro, ma si riprende in seguito. Chiudono l'opera "Thrashed Lost & Strungout" e "We're Not Gonna Fall", la prima molto bella sotto tutti i punti di vista, mentre la seconda può non fare nè caldo nè freddo ma è molto molto accattivante dall'inizio alla fine.
E questo è "Are You Dead Yet?", il culmine di quelle melodie oscure e evocative evocative che hanno caratterizzato per anni i Children Of Bodom e l'inizio di un nuovo stile, ancora da padroneggiare e sperimentare. Uno stile caratterizzato in primis dallo stile delle tastiere, abbandonando quel timbro melodico che da sempre li ha contraddistinti, soprattutto in canzoni come "Downfall", "Bed Of Razors", "Towards Dead End", e imboccando influenze che rimandano un po' all Industrial. Anche i riffs sono meno melodici, ma più violenti e marcati, con molte influenze Thrash, la voce, sempre in scream, è però meno potente e graffiante di album come "Hatebreeder" o "Follow The Reaper".
I soli sono un elemento rimasto QUASI invariato; la tecnica e la bravura non mancano, ma sono meno armoniosi e più "spenti", e nel complesso, il tutto non può che essere amplificato. Al primo impatto "Are You Dead Yet?" risulta quindi nella maggior parte dei casi come un album fiacco, spento, secco, quasi una delusione, che non offre molto all'ascoltatore, nonostante propone un sound completamente nuovo, quest'innovazione sembra non reggere il confronto con gli album precedenti, alcuni considerati dei veri capolavori, seppur contenga delle buone canzoni.In un secondo ascolto, questo nuovo sound può sembrare interessante, sperimentale, ma sempre purtroppo, non all'altezza dei lavori precedenti.
Non ci resta che sperare che col tempo, i Children Of Bodom riescano a evolvere questo sound in qualcosa di ancor più innovativo e maestoso, in modo da regalarci come un tempo dei veri capolavori.

Con Are You Dead Yet? i Children of Bodom compiono un altro passo avanti, raggiungono quello che non raggiunsero con Hate Crew Deathroll.
5/5 a testa alta, sperando che continuino ad evolversi come hanno fatto finora.
