Band d'altri tempi i Cranes: romantici, eterei, glaciali.. indubbiamente grandi. Dopo l'ottimo "Wings of Joy" e il bellissimo "Forever" (senza dimenticare il demo Self-No-Self") le gru non si smentiscono nemmeno col quarto album "Loved", lavoro forse fin troppo sottovalutato rispetto al reale valore.
Dark e cupi come la più depressa dark-wave, delicati e spettrali come il dream pop più avvolgente, il gruppo di Portsmouth rappresenta una sorta di incontro tra Cure e Cocteau Twins, ma rivisti in una chiave più elegiaca. Spinti dal prestigioso supporto di Mr. Robert Smith (dicevamo..) si sono saputi distinguere per uno stile abbastanza personale e capace di evolversi col tempo, basato totalmente sull'affascinante contrasto tra onirici temi chitarristici, dissonanze psichedeliche e l'esile vocina innocente della Shaw, che sul disco si occupa anche del basso. La bella e tenebrosa leader canta queste lente nenie con un falsetto infantile e delicato dall'effetto a dir poco suggestivo. Niente a che vedere con la pur bravissima Liv Kristine o il classico stereotipo goth 90's della bella e la bestia: piuttosto qualcosa di più complesso e metafisico, un lamento solenne e ipnotico ad emulare il pianto di una bambina. Puro splendore.
Il problema (o il bello a seconda dei punti di vista) è che stiamo parlando di una decina di dischi con la stessa voce "petulante" e monoforme senza quasi mai cambiarne il registro: le reazioni sono in genere due: 1 Stufarsi ben presto, roba da martellate sui coglioni. 2 Entrare appieno in questa magnifica spirale di grigi acquerelli asfissianti e sovrannaturali, di cui la voce celestiale di Alison rappresenta soltanto la ciliegina sulla torta, quel qualcosa in più. Ed occhio a quel "più": cambiale impostazione, toglile il "vestito" da Lolita e la stucchevole quanto squisita posa ingenua e abbiamo nient'altro che una delle tante band dream pop.. shoegaze..gothic..darkwave o quello che volete visto che rientrano più o meno in tutto ciò (arrivando persino a territori apocalittico-industriali sul mai troppo celebrato "La Tragédie d'Oreste et Electre"). Quindi è chiaro come la Shaw rappresenti un elemento dal ruolo più che fondamentale all'interno del complesso inglese, qui completato da Mark Francombe e il tuttofare Jim Shaw alla chitarra (quest'ultimo anche su tastiere e batteria), nonchè autore dei brani insieme alla sorella.
Una band dunque dalla ben precisa identità musicale e dalle idee chiare. L'onnipresente chitarra acustica di Jim dipinge tele ora aggraziate ora sinistre ad accompagnare il battito della batteria, che è martellante e lascivo, come nel più classico scenario goticheggiante; lontane chitarre distorte e il suono invece sempre molto vivo del basso, contrappuntato da sporadici innesti di archi e pianoforte, sono gli elementi principali su cui si basa il suono di "Loved". Brani come la marcia "Force of the Entity", la pulsazione dark di "Reverie" e la soave lugubrità di "Bewildered" si fanno forti di questo grappolo di stilemi creando quell'atmosfera oscura e desolata (ma poi nemmeno troppo vista e considerata una certa malcelata gioia spirituale spesso difficile da scorgere) che è tipica della band, qui tradita soltanto dalla dolce "Shining Road" e dall'innocua frivolezza di "Pale Blue Sky".
Il canto tenue e fanciullesco di Alison tocca vette importanti sull'inquietante ninnananna "Paris and Rome"e sul capolavoro "Beautiful Friend": atmosfere dilatate, slide di chitarra e drumming incalzante modellano un' appannata melodia dai toni quanto mai rassegnati. I rumori ripetitivi e le disarmonie di "In The Night" riportano agli esordi di Self-No-Self", "Come This Far" goticheggia più di tutte, mentre il fascino acustico e drammatico di "Are You Gone" ricorda, stavolta molto da vicino, i Cocteau Twins.
Da ripescare insieme ai due precedenti. Lovable !
