Sono passati parecchi anni dall'uscita di questo straordinario disco (1997), ed ancora oggi esso rappresenta un simbolo nel mondo della dance music e della musica alternativa in generale! Il capostipite per eccellenza del french touch (così chiamato!) e ancora prima degli osannati Air o Cassius. Un album della bellezza di 74 minuti suddiviso in 16 tracce e per quanto sia minimalista, è assolutamente geniale se rapportato a quell'epoca! Partorito da due ventenni parigini (Thomas Bengalter e Guy Manuel De Homen-Christo), oggi osannati dal grande pubblico come geni del sound del futuro e produttori di successo.
Certamente visto dal vivo il cd potrebbe lasciare a desiderare per la sua semplicità: copertina scarna (compare solo il nome del duo) e un libretto fin troppo genuino; ma il contenuto del disco è fin troppo sbalordito se pur considerandolo un lavoro casalingo. Con 2 milioni e mezzo di copie vendute nel mondo "Homework" dei Daft Punk rappresenta il disco principale della musica elettronica francese e uno dei principali in genere nel mondo, paragonato per innovazione a: "Mezzanine" dei Massive Attack, "The Fat Of The Land" dei Prodigy e "Surrender" dei Chemical Brothers. Ma ora vediamolo traccia per traccia!
L'album a primo impatto ha una sorta d'introduzione con la traccia "Daftendirekt": una specie di pre-riscaldamento con i strumenti che vanno pian piano accendendosi arricchite dalle solite 2 parole (cosi vogliamo chiamarle!) che dilagano all'infinito, che fanno da apripista al mondo di suoni tech-house succesivi. E fin qui tutto regolare finché si arriva direttamente alla traccia numero 3 "Revolution 909": singolo che mette paura e classico del loro repertorio. Ma siamo ancora nel riscaldamento!
La botta vera e propria arriva dopo con "Da funk": assolutamente capolavoro, ritmo da strada e funk moderno che non hanno niente da invidiare alle pietre miliari del hip hop. Il loro primo singolo accompagnato dallo sputtanato video del cane umanoide che gira tra le strade di New York in cerca di informazioni. Arriva "Phoenix", ancora oggi remixata dai più grandi DJ del mondo, tra cui Basement Jaxx ,e "Fresh", canzone poco sentimentale ma stranamente nostalgica. "Around The World" a mio modo di vedere non dovrebbe essere presentata, la conosciamo tutti! Capolavoro e canzone simbolo del French Touch! Videoclip memorabile di Spike Jonze. Tutto positivo e fin qui molto semplice e orecchiabile, ma la fase sperimentale deve ancora venire con "Rollin' & Scratchin'", quest'ultima rappresenta la fase topica ma allo stesso tempo distruttiva: i graffi sui dischi che si sentono mettono tanta cattiveria in corpo. Bellissima e materiale!
C'è anche spazio alle dediche con "Teachers" da bravi apprendisti DJ e la lista è lunga. Si scivola via fino ad "High Fidelity" e sente la vecchia scuola e l'odissea funk di "Rock'n Roll", a dir poco lunga! "Oh Yeah" fa da stacchetto a "Burnin'": il loro quarto singolo e grande pezzo house. "Indo Silver Club" è l'unica che risalta di meno nel contesto ma "Alive" è pura follia! Da film da fantascienza e dal vivo è proprio un'altra cosa. "Funk Ad" chiude questo straordinario disco per niente sentimentale e non è altro che "Da funk" messa al contrario.
Insomma le parole stanno a zero. Se volete intraprendere la via della sperimentazione c'è poco da fare, dovete comprare assolutamente questo disco! Osannato dal grande pubblico e dai critici "Homework" rappresenta un simbolo della dance dove c'è poco spazio ai sentimentalismi.
Partorito dalle menti di due androidi, questo disco rappresenta l'inizio di una nuova era, a ritmo di funk fino alla robotica di oggi di questo straordinario duo.
Signori la laurea è d'obbligo! Viva i robot!
