In quel di Melbourne, ridente metropoli australiana, vive (o meglio, dovrebbe vivere) la famiglia Minogue. La primogenita, Kylie Ann, non necessita molte divagazioni al riguardo, constatata la sua immensa popolarità anche fra le infinite piazze debaseriane: eccelsa donna di spettacolo, graziosa e radiosa al punto giusto e al momento giusto, molto sontuosa e poco spocchiosa, è riuscita a sfondare nel frivolo e colorato music-biz anni '80 con una manciata di disco hits quali Locomotion e I Should Be So Lucky per poi trasformarsi nella favolosa e "tiny" superstar sculettante di Can't Get You Out Of My Head e Slow, magnifiche esternazioni di voluttuosità e seduzione senza troppe fantasmagorie al riguardo.
La sorella minore Danielle Jane "Dannii" rappresenta l'instabile tentativo di replicare il fascino e le vendite della patron di Casa Minogue: anche lei attrice di soap-opera, anche lei grande estimatrice dei sound danzerecci, anche lei un bel corpicino da fare invidia a starlette ben più affermate. Nonostante ciò, la notorietà e la visibilità che Dannii è riuscita negli anni a conquistarsi neanche riesce a sfiorare i traguardi della più apprezzata Kylie e, come spesso capita in simili match familiari fra aspiranti dive da Olimpo del Pop, la simpatica Dannii ha avuto la peggio fra le due, seppur preservando dignità e doti.
Neon Nights esce nel 2003 e giunge a sei anni di distanza dal poco fortunato Girls; a metà strada fra lo stile disco-sbarazzino di Fever e Light Years e le atmosfere lounge-retrò di Body Language (sempre per fare un doveroso paragone con la sorella), il disco rappresenta la perfetta summa della filosofia di casa Minogue negli anni '00, un flirt fra la magia della pista da ballo (a cui entrambe le artiste ci hanno abituato) e l'eterogeneo laboratorio di sounds "alternativi", giusto per dare quel pizzico di sale & pepe in più ad un piatto già invitante. Il risultato è quindi un buon mix di suoni che molto attingono dalla dance e dall'elettropop, senza tralasciare cospicui richiami al lounge, alla musica house e soprattutto ai notevoli, notevolissimi motivetti anni '70 - '80.
L'album si apre con la conturbante Put The Needle On It, una sorta di preludio al calderone elettro-lounge di Body Language (realizzato dalla sorella lo stesso anno) che inagura (tutte) le danze nel migliore dei modi; il connubio dance/chill-out prosegue con la frivola e sensuale Creep, per poi ripiegare al più tradizionale stile disco-dance nella celebre I Begin To Wonder, in cui gli ammiccamenti danzerecci d'apertura si fanno più corposi e concreti per esplodere del tutto con l'estatico gioiellino techno-trance di Who Do You Love Now?, felice collaborazione con il duo house olandese Riva.
In Hey! (So What) si incomincia a respirare a pieni polmoni la brezza disco-dance anni '70, tuttavia il vero e proprio mood alla "febbre del sabato sera" viene assorbito da Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling, brano che è presente nel disco in versione mash up con la hit di Madonna Into The Groove (tributo che la stessa Madonna ha eccezionalmente definito come "brillante"). Ulteriori esternazioni retrò-danzerecci arricchite da improvvisazioni elettroniche/house retrò si riscontrano in For The Record, On The Loop, Mighty Fine e Mystified. Chiudono il tutto le piacevoli bizzarrie robotiche di A Piece Of Time e la dolce ballata romantica It Won't Work Out.
Nel complesso siamo di fronte a un gradevole lavoro dance-pop, lontano dalle oderne aberrazioni elettroniche e dagli "eccessi" di diva disco-dance, un album semplice, immediato e senza troppe pretese, fronzoli e stravaganze, perfetto per "iniziare" se stessi all'alternativa "familiare" della magnifica Kylie.
