1981: ecco il Funk/Yacht Rock all'ennesima potenza del discone dei Maxus, dove le trame strumentali toccano spesso e volentieri la Fusion più vorticosa.
Ne sono un esempio i dialoghi della chitarra di Michael Landau e delle tastiere di Robbie Buchanan che su Where Were You si avvicinano ai Weather Report di Heavy Weather.
La voce e i fraseggi al piano di Jay Gruska sono impeccabili sia nelle ballad (come Part Of You e Keep A Light On) che nei pezzi più robusti. Tipo il groove sparato come un treno di They Danced, la magnifica What You Give e l'opener The Higher You Rise, pezzone da far invidia ai Toto.
Le vibes degli Steely Dan affiorano su Don't Try To Stop Me Now, mentre Nobody's Business è la canzone perfetta che tutti avrebbero voluto scrivere.
Poi, ascolti il basso di Your Imagination e dici: "ma è un featuring con Mark King?!"
perché se questo è un brano simbolo del Funky più raffinato lo si deve (anche) alle slappate del superbo Mark Leonard.
No, non è il classico discuccio dove aspetti soltanto il ritornello paraculo, questo è un album dove c'è gente che suona da paura.
