L'ultimo album studio dei Garbage risale a 3 anni fa, quel rockeggiante "Bleed Like Me" che quasi chiudeva i ponti con l'altra metà elettronica che sin dagli esordi ha sempre contraddistinto il gruppo, e che purtroppo ad oggi è stato l'ennesimo tassello che proclama il lento declino di questo gruppo molto in voga negli anni 90, dichiaratosi "momentaneamente diviso" (pff) e a lavoro su progetti solisti (uè Shirley sto ancora aspettando!).
Nell'estate 2007, i nostri, vuoi per accordi discografici, vuoi per motivazioni puramente commerciali, vuoi per risollevare le loro quotazioni, mai come adesso in ribasso, decidono di pubblicare finalmente questo primo greatest "Absolute Garbage", già anticipato da tempo. Tale raccolta arriva a distanza di ben 12 anni dal primo omonimo lavoro, scelta quindi accettabile e del tutto condivisibile, considerato l'imponente numero di artistuccioli che dopo nemmeno 2 album, ed altrettanti anni di attività, se ne esce con ridicoli Best Of ($$$). La tracklist è stesa in ordine temporale, apre con i primi grandiosi classici, chiude con i lavori più recenti, si puo tranquillamente notare come l'ago pendi decisamente per le prime produzioni, anni luce lontane dalle zuccherose track del nuovo millennio (specie i singoli tratti da Beautifulgarbage). A conferma dell'appeal perso dai Garbage, il disco non ha ottenuto grandissimi riscontri in quanto a copie vendute.
3 le edizioni disponibili: una singola base con i loro maggiori successi, un inedito (la easy "Tell Me Where It Hurts" (non eccelsa), ed un nuovo ottimo re-edit di "It's All Over But The Crying", ballad presente in versione originale su "Bleed Like Me"); una versione doppa limitata, che aggiunge un cd bonus di 13 remix curati da grossi nomi dei più svariati generi, più una chicca, una nuova versione di "Bad Boyfriend" rieditata da Butch & soci (di gran lunga migliore dell'originale); infine una versione DVD con tutti i video da loro pubblicati, e un documentario di 69 minuti che include materiale backstage, tv, interviste, spezzoni di tour / studio, ed alcuni interessanti "dietro le quinte", spesso filmati da loro stessi. In tutte le edizioni sarà senzaltro benaccolta la presenza di "The World Is Not Enough" (superba colonna sonora datata 1999 dell'omonimo capitolo del film 007) e della suadente quanto spettacolare # 1 Crush (colonna sonora del film "Romeo + Juliet" uscita nel 1997), entrambe rilasciate ai tempi in versione cd-singolo. Deludente l'artwork in bianco e nero, che oltre agli ovvi crediti editoriali, riporta i posti toccati nei loro tour, alcuni cenni biografici, collage di foto, i testi, e i soliti scontati ringraziamenti da parte di ogni componente.
Embè? Il solito Greatest fatto per ciulare soldi ai fan puristi malati tipo Yosif? No, il disco al contrario di gentaglia che si limita ad una sistematica e macchinosa raccolta singoli, presenta dei fattori davvero interessanti che valgono appieno la spesa, mi riferisco ovviamente alla limited doppia in mio possesso, che oltre alle chicche già citate, contiene alcuni remix imperdibili, la maggior parte edit di remix già pubblicati sulle versioni cd singolo e vinile, ma alcuni rari e attualmente poco reperibili. Qualche esempio? Oltre i classici validi rmx club-oriented confezionati dai nomi più altisonanti della House Music (tra cui Timo Maas, Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry, e non ultimo il leggendario Danny Tenaglia), vale la pena gettarsi a capofitto sugli altri rmx Trip Hop ed Elettronici. E' il caso del rmx di "The World Is Not Enough" curato dal noto progetto U.N.K.L.E, o la versione di "Milk" targata nientedimeno che Massive Attack (non potrà non essere apprezzato dai cultori del Bristol Sound). Validissimo anche lo sporco e vocoderizzato rmx Electro by Felix Da Housecat di "Androginy" (rivoluzionatissima), che di fatto più che un remix, crea un nuovo brano a se. I Crystal Method esaltano, scompongono e "distruggono" "I Think I'm Paranoid" con un pestosissimo rmx big beat stile Prodigy. Gli eclettici Fun Lovin' Criminals ripropongono invece il capolavoro "You Look So Fine" in chiave acustica-blues-jazz. Non mancano certo alcune cadute di tono come il pessimo remix di Queer, ma a prevalere sono i remix da pollice verso l'alto.
Cheppercaso non conoscete i Garbage?! Potete cominciare col procurarvi questa raccolta, troverete le varie "Vow", "I Think I'm Paranoid", "Only Happy When It Rains", "Special", "Stupid Girl", e i pezzi che hanno fatto la storia del gruppo; se invece la risposta è negativa o non amate la band, non è da sottovalutare per i più aperti la possibilità di gustarsi i remix, che spaziano su innumerevoli generi.
