Napalm Death, Jesu, Techno Animal, God, Greymachine, Head of David, JK Flesh sono alcune delle creature musicali che hanno visto impegnato Justin Broadrick, uno dei personaggi più importanti (se non il più importante) degli ultimi tre decenni di Industrial Metal.
Ho dato una visione a tutta la discografia di Justin ed ormai ha raggiunto e superato l'impressionante cifra di cento album tra lavori di suo pugno e collaborazioni infinite; ma quando devo associare una sola band al cantante e polistrumentista inglese un unico nome mi balza alla mente: i Godflesh. La minacciosa ed irriverente "Carne di Dio". Ed è di questi giorni la notizia, attesa per me come manna dal cielo, del nuovo disco della band programmato per il prossimo 17 Novembre. "Post Self" è il suo titolo.
La cappa di pesante smog, dovuta alle scarsissime pioggie degli ultimi mesi, che attanaglia da settimane il Nord Italia mi ha fatto pensare ai fumi industriali che sembrano fuoriuscire nell'ascolto della musica dei Godflesh; giusto allora parlare di "Us And Them" il quinto lavoro in ordine temporale(sco) pubblicato nella primavera del 1999.
Dopo la parentesi del precedente "Songs of Love and Hate" che aveva visto l'utilizzo di un batterista vero e proprio, ancora una volta Justin si affida ad una drum-machine; aumentando a dismisura i loop elettronici, i campionamenti, i giri di chitarra e basso ripetuti fino allo sfinimento. Anche la voce assume connotati più umani e ne consegue che "Us And Them" può essere considerato il loro disco più accessibile (termine da prendere con le dovute cautele ovviamente).
L'esperienza di oltre dieci anni di carriera ha consentito ai Godflesh di manipolare meglio la propria materia sonora; un maggior senso ritmico che va ad incontrare un suono di chitarra non più crushing e sanguinoso come agli inizi. Ma non vorrei darvi troppe illusioni perchè la musica che fuoriesce dai dodici brani della raccolta rimane sempre cinica, apocalittica, spietata. Non hanno perso un oncia di brutalità e potenza; c'è una produzione migliore che aiuta a "digerire" meglio questa sorta di Industrial Trip Hop (si ascolti in merito il finale di "Control Freak").
"The Eternal", con il suo andamento narcolettico ed una voce nitida, sembra un assaggio del suono che Justin fornirà con i Jesu; ma i capolavori assoluti sono da ricercarsi nell'opener "I, Me, Mine" con il suo ritmo House-Jungle, nella title track che parte con un mostruoso andamento Sludge per poi esplodere in un finale Techo-Industrial e soprattutto in "Bittersweet" che, come ci trasmette il titolo, è un inseguirsi di opposte frenetiche sensazioni: oppressione e catarsi.
