Se siete tra coloro i quali trovano i gruppi spiccatamente derivativi un po' indigesti, allora potete fermarvi già qui.
Infatti i Godsmack prendono il nome da una canzone degli Alice in Chains, nonchè il loro simbolo e una grossa parte delle loro sonorità; se in più ci aggiungete che la voce del cantante è una sorta di mix tra quella del compianto Layne Staley e quella più rocciosa di James Hetfield e che, inoltre, come titolo per il loro greatest hits hanno scelto il nome di un celeberrimo pezzo dei Led Zeppelin ("Good Times, Bad Times"), il cerchio si chiude.
Detto ciò il loro secondo Lp "Awake" è probabilmente la migliore release che i Godsmack hanno regalato al grande pubblico, nella quale riescono ad esprimere la loro idea di musica al meglio: un hard-rock irrobustito da innesti metal (Nu) nel quale gli stilemi della tradizione si vanno ad intrecciare con sfumature più moderne, come l'uso di una produzione pulita, piena, nitida e tendente a sonorità basse e groovy. Tutto riesce a risultare facilmente accessibile sin dal primo ascolto senza poter essere accusato di ruffianaggine; esemplificative al riguardo sono la famosa e decisamente valida title-track e la conclusiva "Spiral" dove trame orientaleggianti sfociano in bordate di chitarre molto heavy contrapposte alla melodia del cantato.
Musicalmente i rimandi all'Alice incatenata sono molteplici, dalle linee vocali di Sully Erna, sempre suadenti e molto spesso filtrate come in "Bad Magick", all'utilizzo abbondante di chitarre wha-whate e distorte, volte a creare riff rocciosi e allo stesso tempo ipnotici, vedi l'orecchiabile "Goin' Down" e "Mistakes", monolitica e tellurica con il suo incedere strumentale nel finale.
Da segnalare è "Vampires", penso uno dei rarissimi esempi di traccia strumentale nell'ambito del metal da classifica: ok, nulla di così trascendentale o complicato, ma lascia di sicuro il segno per compattezza e aggressività.
In definitiva i Godsmack resteranno sempre un gruppo, come detto in apertura, derivativo e con la grave pecca di non essere riuscito (o di non aver voluto) a rinnovare col tempo il proprio suono, ma sicuramente sono tra le poche metal-band nate nel nuovo millennio ad aver scelto la strada della coerenza nel portare avanti il proprio progetto, senza farsi condizionare troppo dalle mode del momento, come purtroppo spesso accade.
