"Godsmack" è il primo lavoro omonimo della band americana di Boston (con tanta italia nelle vene). Ormai ai più la solita storia è nota, i Godsmack stanno al terzo millennio come gli Alice In Chains stanno agli anni '90 (il nome del quartetto coincide con un pezzo del CD " Dirt ", targato appunto "Alice In Chains") eppure mi esporrò per cercarvi di farvi capire che non è proprio cosi, o meglio non solo cosi.
Da subito si evince la ritmica ruffiana e commerciale di pezzi in loop e di facile assimilazione come "Whatever" e "Keep Away" e come già detto dal sottoscritto in una recensione dedicata sempre ai medesimi, le linee di voce del leader Salvatore Erna marcano profondamente quelle del deceduto Layne Staley nelle parentesi melodiche, per poi sfociare in ritornelli graffianti che riportano molto ai James Hetfield e Chris Cornell dei bei tempi. Paragonare il vocalist di origine siciliane ad icone cosi pesanti del rock contemporaneo è sicuramente più un onore che un onere per lo stesso, ma il modo in cui Erna e il gruppo in generale riescono a mescolare melodia e potenza senza mai superare i limiti dell'orecchiabilità è altamente apprezzabile.
Insomma tutto rientra in un quadro ben disegnato e pulito senza niente di strafatto e lasciato li per caso, persino la esoterica "Voodoo" ne esce a testa alta risultando non solo la classica "truzzata" degna del miglior pseudo-grezzo-gangster quale è l'Erna, ma risulta persino credibile nel suo essere spudoratamente una dichiarazione di dedizione alla magia, magia che a quanto pare, affascina molto il nostro italo-americano; "Sully thanks all the beautiful witches across this earth" dice il book della copertina. Il 'paganesimo' tocca anche "Bad Religion", qui gli accordi di Tony Rombola (altro discendente del belpaese) risentono molto di un orecchiabilità sempre ben accetta. Alla fine tra la tamarra "Get Up, Get Out!" e la 'Chainseniana' "Moon Baby" l'album raccoglie a mio avviso le 4 stelle, certo mancano episodi particolarmente potenti, ma il futuro dopo questo primo lavoro del '98 sarà più roseo al gruppo, che con i successivi "Awake" e "Faceless" non solo conquisteranno un maggior successo e pubblico, ma acquisiranno una personalità che li allontanerà dall'ombra delle varie icone del passato.
I vari Staley, Cornell, Hetfield hanno già detto la loro, chissà se Erna li seguirà a ruota, credo di no, ma egoisticamente spero di si e spero che il prossimo album in uscita tra la fine del 2009 e l'inizio del 2010 consacri definitivamente una delle pochissime band che è riuscita a sopravvivere nello spento nu-metal del terzo millennio senza farne praticamente mai parte (o quasi).
