Agli inglesi piace synth. Agli inglesi piace dance. Agli inglesi piace rarefatto. Agli inglesi piace artefatto. Agli inglesi piacciono i Goldfrapp, degni rappresentanti dell'ultima (o penultima) stagione elettro-lite, terribilmente vintage, eppure così frivola, sbarazzina e magnetica da rimanere, appunto, elettrizzati. Due poli della stessa medaglia: da un lato l'affascinante femme fatale di Sua Maestà Alison Goldfrapp, la vocalist in stile cabaret darwinianamente adattata al filone bionico prescelto, dall'altro il reconditissimo Will Gregory, nell'angolino (per nulla trascurabile) del confezionamento sonoro. A metà strada fra l'eterea magia dei padri del sythn pop (Depeche Mode in primis), il flirt con la pista da ballo e lo splendore da rotocalco della innegabile perfezione pop Minogue-Ellis Bextor, i Goldfrapp riuscirono a debuttare neanche all'alba del nuovo millennio con Felt Mountain (1999), un lavoro instrumental/ambient avanguardista e bizzarro che poco fece in classifica; la virata verso sound meno evanescenti e più pestati avvenne con il successivo Black Cherry, tuttavia la conferma del potenziale del duo attraverso il bieco, eppure fondamentale successo commerciale avvenne proprio con Supernature e con il primo estratto Ooh La La, il raffinato club anthem per eccellenza che completò il primo puzzle-carriera di Alison e Will. La seconda (ed attuale) stagione dei Goldfrapp prese vita con l'eccentrico progetto folktronico di Seventh Tree e con il più semplice e filo-mainstream Head First, ultima espressione degli "inglesini" in analisi.
Con Supernature i Goldfrapp proseguono la virata verso la più effettiva concretezza sonora intrapresa con Black Cherry. E così che le fluide e "gassose" sensazioni ambient-strumentali di Felt Mountain lasciano sempre più spazio ad un mix electro-glitch-glam fortemente legato alle leggendarie suggestioni futuristiche degli Ottanta. Il primo estratto Ooh La La ne è la degna dimostrazione: un potentissimo pezzo robotico dance-retrò adattissimo alle passerelle e ai lustrini. Ma anche i successivi brani non sono da meno, con il funky-elettronico Lovely 2 C U, le ispirazioni new wave - lounge in Satin Chic, il simpatico synth-rock di Fly Me Away e le vibrazioni disco-glam di Ride A White Horse.
Strette nel bel mezzo della tracklist non mancano reminiscenze del più "pacato" Felt Mountain o addirittura preludi al misticismo extraspirituale di Seventh Tree: la ninna nanna ambient al pianoforte di Let It Take You, il sapore trip hop semi instrumental in Time Out From The World, i drammi vocali di Alison conditi al synth di Koko e la nostalgia rarefatta e pseudo lirica in You Never Know.
A tratti vintage, a tratti robotico, a tratti sexy glam, Supernature è un audace mix di tutta la parte "buona" del pop: quella dei tributi ai decenni andati eseguiti senza troppe shakeramenti deleteri, quella della scelta elettronica priva di artifici superflui, quella di una sensualità al microfono amica di padiglioni e orbite. In poche parole, quella dei nostri "amici" Goldfrapp.

C'è qualcosa di meccanico nei richiami al sesso e alla trasgressione che si ripresentano puntualmente... il porno chic del singolo "Ride A White Horse".
Con "You Never Know" Goldfrapp ci riporta indietro ai tempi del primo lavoro regalandoci il momento più alto dell'album: una miscela di malinconia misteriosa ed esaltazione mistica.
