Appena consumato il funerale del “brit-pop” la paura più grande che sembrava serpeggiare
nell’ambiente era che, nonostante questo genere ampiamente svalutato era stato consegnato alla storia, per gran parte dei giovani musicisti inglesi l’unico interesse sembrava essere il continuare a cantare di un “muro meraviglioso” e di una Sally che non li avrebbe mai amati. Per un momento la generale sensazione proveniente dalla terra d’Albione era che da quelle parti dopo anni in cui dalla scena di Madchester agli Oasis nuova linfa era stata apportata al rock, le idee si fossero di colpo totalmente esaurite.
In questo contesto va inserita la piacevole accoglienza riservata ai Gomez nel lontano 1998. Da Liverpool, uno dei siti maggiormente indiziato in quei tempi nello sfornare cloni con i capelli a caschetto, usciva finalmente un gruppo di ragazzi che pur senza rinnegare le radici del rock-melodico inglese, non si spaventava nell’andare a pescare ispirazioni altrove, anche lontano dalla stessa Inghilterra, realizzando un suono ben presto divenuto distintivo e unico della stessa band.
“Split The Difference” è l’ultima fatica dei Gomez e se si esclude l’esordio “Brig It On” che ne rivelò le potenzialità, il migliore dell’intera produzione.
Accantonati definitivamente le interferenze digitali che fecero apparire “In Our Gun” un tentativo di eccessiva sperimentazione, e abbandonata l’idea di un lavoro totalmente auto-prodotto (il producer ora è Tchad Blake già con Tom Waits e Crowded House), queste ultime 13 tracce virano verso un suono più rock, più incisivo e diretto che non per questo relega il solito affascinante tocco melodico in un ruolo di secondo piano.
Blues-rock ottimamente suonato, influenze che passano dalla psichedelica al folk, il solito perfetto alternarsi di quasi tutti i componenti della band al microfono e infine l’ immancabile manciata di ballate (“Sweet Virginia” ricorda per nostalgia e impatto il loro cavallo di battaglia “We Haven’t Turned Around”, la conclusiva “There It Was” è semplicemente un gioiello), compongono un quadro che ci mostra i Gomez nel pieno della loro maturità artistica ormai finalmente liberi dall’essere considerati solamente una piacevole sorpresa.
