Quello degli Interpol è un grande debutto, e un disco tanto bello forse non potevamo aspettarcelo, a meno che non conoscessimo le coordinate di questo gruppo: quattro ragazzi di New York (non un posto a caso) attratti dal sound anni '80 di gente come Smiths, Joy Division e Television (non tre gruppi a caso) non meno che da quello anni '00 dei concittadini Strokes.
E poi una copertina stupenda.
Giunto alla prova dell'ascolto sono rimasto estasiato. Il riferimento ai Joy Division è inevitabile, a partire dalla voce e da quel senso dark che imprigiona tutte le canzoni, anche quelle più tirate (Obstacle 1, PDA).
Le chitarre e i bassi risentono di un background pesantissimo, come da tradizione newyorkese; ciononostante gli Interpol riescono a costruire melodie estremamente raffinate.
È nelle ballate infatti che il disco raggiunge il suo apice. L'iniziale Untitled fa pensare all'Inghilterra, mentre NYC, immenso tributo alla propria città, sembra scritta sotto alle torri gemelle, mentre sprofondano lentamente. Hands Away è pop d'autore, con un crescendo da brividi.
Ma il pezzo che fa la differenza è la storia di Stella, dolce, malinconica, decadente, da amare per tutta la vita.
Fate in modo da avere questo disco e non ve ne staccherete mai più. Se la lotta coi Notwist per la palma di disco dell'anno. Da isola deserta.

È difficile spiegare cosa si prova ad ascoltare questa canzone: si ha come la sensazione di essere trasportati in un'altra dimensione compiendo un viaggio lento in un clima sognante.
Questo è uno di quegli album che non ci si stancherebbe mai di ascoltare: non è mai ripetitivo, mai banale, ma sembra anzi riservare sempre qualcosa di nuovo ogni volta che lo inserisci nello stereo.
