L'album che sto per recensire è il primo live degli Iron Butterfly, che uscì nel 1970 prodotto da Richard Polodor che aveva già prodotto "Born To Be Wild" degli Steppenwolf e i Three Dog Night e venne registrato a San Diego tra il 25 e il 30 maggio 1969.
L'album si apre con In Time of Our Lives, tratto da Ball del 1969. La canzone ha un intro al cardiopalma fatto di distorsioni e di un ritmo lento e ossessivo che la rende ''heavy'', la batteria di Bushy chiude questo fantastica canzone.
Col secondo pezzo, Filled With Fear tratto sempre da Ball l'intro della canzone è una lotta tra le distorsioni e la voce di Ingle, poi tutto diventa una semi-ballad con la voce di Ingle che ci fa da intermezzo.
Dopo viene la canzone Soul Experience, tratta sempre da Ball, dopo un fantastico tutto il pezzo è guidato dal basso di Dorman che con Ingle ci porta direttamente nella psichedelia '60 che viene interrotta ogni tanto dalla batteria di Bushy e col finale che diventa una lotta tra strumenti musicali e la voce di Ingle.
La canzone dopo, You Can't Win tratta dal primo album del gruppo del 1968, Heavy ha un breve discorso di Ingle per il ritorno dei soldati dal Vietnam poi la chitarra di Brann e l'organo hammmond ci fanno da intro per poi portare la canzone verso lidi rock con la batteria quasi tribale di Bushy.
Con Are You Happy tratta da In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida dove il pubblico è veramente in delirio con la canzone che è una delle più famose del gruppo. La canzone è perfetta e rimane un'altra perla dell'album, ma lapoteosi dell'album arriva col finale, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida che a differenza dell'edizione su cd ha un intro di hammond e il basso di Dorman rimane pulsante per tutta lacanzone. Inoltre il pezzo è piu' veloce che sulla versione su cd. L'intermezzo tribale di Bushy rende la canzone fantastica.
Facendo un giudizio finale dell'album dell'album lo ritengo uno dei migliori degli anni '60 e degli anni '70... da avere a occhi chiusi...

Iron Butterfly
Rock band statunitense formatasi a San Diego nel 1966. La formazione classica comprende Doug Ingle (voce, organo), Ron Bushy (batteria), Lee Dorman (basso) ed Erik Brann (chitarra). Raggiunsero il successo mondiale con In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (1968), caratterizzato da organo Hammond e una title track di 17 minuti.
