Disco cool del mese! (Mi meraviglio che ancora non sia stato recensito). La fenice torna a volare in alto, avvolta dalle fiamme. L’art direction a 360 gradi di Frusciante ingloba nel disco alcuni elementi che lo rendono, subito, a priori, un must: Omar Rodriguez (At The Drive In, The Mars Volta) alla chitarra in due brani, Flea appare fugacemente in una sola traccia, le foto del book sono state scattate da Vincent Gallo (sono normalissime foto in bianco e nero, però, si sa, se le scatta Vincent Gallo sono fighe… ), Chad Smith alla batteria e John rispettivamente impegnato in voce, chitarra, basso, sintetizzatori, tastiere e percussioni. Produced by himself. 18 canzoni per 65 minuti di musica.
Il colore dominante che irrompe, nell’ipotetico quadro che rappresenta questo disco, è sicuramente il rosso.
Rosso come il fuoco, il sangue, la passione…La passione che si sente in canzoni come Second Wall (un minuto e trentasei di musica tanto per ricordare al mondo chi è tra i migliori chitarristi rock in circolazione…).
La prima parte dell’album spazia entro i confini del rock più classico, con riferimenti a Beatles, Neil Young, Beach Boys, senza abbandonare l’aggressività e la frenesia del rock elettrico moderno. In alcune tracce sembra di sentire il miglior Ben Harper che suda sul palco, mentre, in altre, il riferimento va solo ed esclusivamente ai Pink Floyd più contorti e neri. La seconda parte del disco (specialmente le ultime tracce) combinano alla grande i percorsi elettronici (vocoder, synthesizers impazziti, loop computerizzati che riempiono gli spazi) con quelli prettamente rock (altro che Matt Bellamy…).
Le canzoni non eccedono mai in nessun verso: né troppo barocche, né, tantomeno, pop song pallose.
Le chitarre acustiche lasciano spesso l’onore a quelle ruggenti e distorte. Ed è proprio su quelle parti di chitarra che si trova la chiave di lettura dell’album. Un grande grande lavoro di Alternative Rock. Già a metà disco, proprio mentre state sorridendo per la goduria, vi comincia a nascere la domanda fatidica, che non vi abbandonerà neanche alla fine dei brani: “Ma perché questo, se è così bravo, si ostina a restare nei Red Hot?” Mistero della fede. O del denaro…

Il risultato è un disco dal sound pulito e figlio della passione tutta frusciantiana per le melodie e le armonie vocali.
John Frusciante è senza dubbio uno dei chitarristi più inflazionati dell’ultimo decennio per varie ragioni, occorre però ammettere che non molti artisti "giovani" sono in grado di vantare il talento melodico presente in questo disco.
