Mi ricordo ancora di quel giorno mentre cambiando canale inciampai sulla vecchia Video Music nel bel mezzo di Roxy Bar con il buon Red Ronnie.
Stava annunciando una band di cui il nome mi sfuggiva e il titolo della canzone che si apprestava ad eseguire aveva un suono piuttosto russo, Tattva.
Ebbene, dopo aver ascoltato questa canzone ebbi quella ben nota sensazione di aver assaggiato un pezzo di torta e di volerne molto di piú. Dovetti fare lo spelling per far capire il nome Kula Shaker al commesso del reparto CD, ma dopo una modesta attesa il mio CD arrivò in versione doppia con la cover di Hush di Joe South (resa famosa dai Deep Purple) nel secondo disco.
Il suono del disco rievoca le sonorità degli anni '70 ed è intriso di Sitar e altri strumenti orientali che creano un'atmosfera molto comoda, credo che lo stile di questo album si possa definire Brit-Rock Psichedelico.
Lungo la track list si trovano due bellissime tribute chiaramente indirizzate a Jerry Garcia, leader dei Grateful Dead: "Grateful When You're Dead" e "Jerry Was There"... dal titolo non si direbbe, eh?
Altre vere bellezze di questo disco sono certamente il singolo che ha lanciato l'album, Tattva, ma anche quelle tracce che sembrano quasi stare a lí a separare le canzoni e che sono suonate con strumenti indiani... per la pace dell'anima.
Ma il modo migliore per goderselo è lasciarlo andare per tutta la sua lungehzza poiché la qualità delle canzoni mantiene un livello omogeneo di alto gradimento. Tutto ciò permette l'ascolto di quest'album sia da chi cerca qualcosa pop ma anche da chi vuole qualcosa non propriamente detto commerciale.
Le chitarre sono melodiose ma talvolta la distorsione entra dentro veramente travolgente. Ricordo che quando lo portai a casa il disco fece molta fatica a lasciar posto ad altra musica, e anche se si trattava di qualche anno fa, tutt'ora si trova nello stereo in cucina da qualche settimana.
Un ottimo disco d'esordio per una band che si è bruciata troppo in fretta.
