Grezzo, ruvido, acerbo, graffiante, sporco e polveroso.
Le tracce di quest'album, primo lavoro dei Kyuss, datato 1990, scorrono con difficoltà attraverso le casse dello stereo.
Sembrerebbe quasi che la sabbia, i ciottoli e le poche piante aride e rinsecchite della Coachella Valley siano rimasti imprigionati in queste scarne composizioni, e che esse creino attrito con le ritmiche hard rock e di stampo sabbathiano.
Fra i riff riciclati dalle band anni '70 si insinua infatti un morbo, fino a quel momento sconosciuto, formato da infiltrazioni psichedeliche, tinte acide e ombre del deserto.
Il morbo, tuttavia, è ancora in fase di "gestazione", e non riesce a dare contributi troppo evidenti, che affiorano solo ogni tanto.
Esso riuscirà finalmente a infettare i Kyuss solo nel 1992, con l'immortale blues per il sole rosso, creando finalmente qualcosa di sconvolgente, un sound unico e mostruoso: lo stoner.
La pubblicazione di questo album (e del successivo "Wretch"), quindi, può essere considerata solo come una prova, un salto dal trampolino.
Sonorità come quelle di "Black Widow", "Happy Birthday" o "Love Has Passed Me By" non appartengono in nessun modo ai Kyuss che verranno, e sono solo la dimostrazione più palese delle origini e dei richiami agli stilemi dell'hard rock o delle nuove esplosioni sonore metalliche, che sembrano però riferirsi solo all'heavy metal anni '80, senza prendere in considerazione ritmiche più serrate o taglienti.
Il blues di stampo prettamente sabbathiano si può invece ritrovare in tracce come "King" o "Window of Souls", lente, pesanti e cadenzate dalla pesante batteria di Bjork.
"Deadly Kiss" invece risulta diversa e, posta come traccia d'apertura, risulta particolarmente significativa, soprattutto nell'intro: in questa si riescono a sentire molto i primi effetti del morbo-stoner, grazie al possente riff di Homme ma soprattutto grazie alla prestazione di Garcia che, nonostante si dimostri ancora alle prime armi, offre un cantato acido, graffiante ma allo stesso tempo avvolgente.
Eccetto il basso, piuttosto anonimo (non è ancora arrivato Oliveri), sono interessanti le performance di Homme e Bjork: mentre il primo è ancora parecchio "frenato", oserei dire, dai già fin troppe volte ribaditi schemi ritmici seventies, o addirittura è spinto a utilizzare tecniche che non utilizzerà mai più (vedi il tapping di "Happy Birthday", grezzissimo!), il secondo mostra una maggior sicurezza, facendo affiorare qua e là la sua vena creativa, anche se con modestia.
Tutto questo viene condito da una produzione sporca e artigianale, realizzata in uno sperduto studio di registrazione nel bel mezzo del deserto, utilizzato anche per opere successive (le "desert session" di Homme).
Opera consigliata ai veri "sons of Kyuss".
