A ben vedere, in certe vecchie foto Tony Clarkin sembra più uno stregone che un chitarrista. E difatti proprio di magia si parla se si pensa che questo barbuto signore inglese (da tempo mi sono convinto che in quella folta barba nascondesse i plettri di riserva) da più di tre decadi compone musica meravigliosa praticamente senza mai ripetersi. Il nostro ha anche avuto la fortuna (magia pure questa?) di trovare sempre degli ottimi musicisti che lo hanno assecondato in questa grande avventura nel mondo del Rock. Musicisti che hanno saputo impreziosire le composizioni senza mai peccare di protagonismo, dote rara in questo ambiente dove un presunto virtuosismo tecnico spesso è più un modo per mascherare la carenza di idee che una qualità.
Anno di grazia 1979, l'avventura dei Magnum (escludendo il singolo "Sweets For My Sweet" del '75) è già iniziata l'anno prima con l'ottimo "Kingdom Of Madness" e prosegue ora con il secondo capitolo, "Magnum II" appunto (si cita la regina o il dirigibile?). Non so quanto all'epoca i cinque rockers fossero entusiasti della copertina del disco, di sicuro (e a ragione) lo erano del suo contenuto. L'album riprende le forti influenze Prog dell'esordio delineando in maniera ancor più decisa il loro stile Hard Rock melodico/sinfonico.
Si parlava di una grande avventura e proprio "Great Adventure" è il titolo della prima canzone che ben esemplifica quanto detto finora: song articolata e decisamente Prog, tanto che potrebbe lasciare spiazzato chi conosce questo gruppo per la loro produzione da metà anni '80 in poi. Si cambia totalmente registro con la successiva "Changes", AOR di gran classe, solare e dal forte impatto emotivo che verrà successivamente remixata e riproposta prima come singolo, poi come bonus-track nelle ultime ristampe in CD (nonchè già presente in molte delle numerose raccolte). Melodia in evidenza anche in "If I Could Live Forever" che parte quasi come una ballad ma che nelle mani dei Magnum diventa qualcos'altro e, quando Tony Clarkin tira fuori dal suo magico cappello una inaspettata quanto geniale accelerazione Hard nella parte centrale, non ci resta che levarcelo noi il capello di fronte a tanta ispirazione. Una delle loro più belle canzoni di sempre. Il disco prosegue all'insegna di un Hard Pomp/Prog variegato e dinamico come nella mini-suite "Reborn", splendidamente cantata da Bob Catley, o nella cupa e sofferta "So Cold The Night", con un riff di chitarra quasi marziale che farebbe invidia anche a Mr. Tony Iommi. Ma non mancano anche momenti più catchy come in "Foolish Heart", mentre più vicina ai canoni classici della ballad è "Stayin' Alive" (niente a che vedere con l'omonimo brano dei Bee Gees!). D'alto livello la performance del tastierista Richard Bailey (lo ritroveremo anche sul live "Marauder" dell'anno dopo, prima di lasciare il posto al più noto Mark Stanway) che si fa notare anche per i suoi preziosi interventi al flauto (come nella già citata "Reborn" o in "Firebird") e della sezione ritmica composta da Colin "Wally" Lowe al basso e Kex Gorin alla batteria, musicista quest'ultimo che, come il grande Lee Kerslake degli Uriah Heep, avrebbe tanto da insegnare a quei batteristi che pensano che l'utilizzo del loro strumento si esaurisca nell'uso della doppia cassa.
Il disco è stato più volte ristampato (anche con una fantascientifica copertina di Rodney Matthews) e le recenti edizioni in CD includono oltre al remix di "Changes" anche delle interessanti B-side. Lunga vita ai Magnum!
