Anno 1988. I Manowar dopo la pubblicazione del buon Fighting The World raggiungono l'equilibrio tra lo stile diretto del precedente lavoro e le atmosfere epiche dei primi album con questo Kings Of Metal, innegabilmente uno dei pilastri dell'Heavy Metal più canonico.
Tutti i brani sono accattivanti e perfettamente inseriti nell'atmosfera del disco, aperto da WHEELS OF FIRE velocissima e dotata di un refrain irresistibile. Segue la title-track brano che è valso ai Manowar critiche asprissime e lodi incessanti, da un lato per il testo forse troppo auto-celebrativo, dall'altro per il valore del brano fra i migliori del repertorio.
E'il turno dunque di due canzoni incredibili. La prima, la ballad pianistica HEART OF STEEL è incredibilmente emotiva ed intensa, a mio parere una delle più grandi Metal - ballad mai composte; la seconda è la maestosa ed epica THE CROWN AND THE RING in cui dei cori dal sapore gotico accompagnano una prova maiuscola di Adams (uno dei migliori cinque cantanti Metal in circolazione, non c'è storia che tenga).
A questo punto entriamo nella seconda parte del disco che contiene un brano che è pilastro della discografia del gruppo di New York ossia la ormai leggendaria HAIL AND KILL. Il brano parte calmo e lento salvo esplodere subito in una cavalcata trascinante che come al solito tesse le lodi degli invincibili guerrieri del vero Metal destinati a prevalere sempre. Il disco si conclude con un'altra cavalcata metallica, BLOOD OF THE KINGS di cui va segnalato il testo che cita gli album della band e i paesi in cui i Manowar hanno riscosso (meritato) successo.
Aldilà della loro immagine e del loro atteggiamento discutibili i Manowar restano in virtù di album come questo una grande band, che nulla ha da spartire con le attuali Power Metal band tanto inutili quanto inconsistenti, le quali invano cercano di emularne le gesta.

Quello che ci viene proposto da Joey DeMaio e Co. è un metal possente, energico e naturalmente epico al 100%.
La titletrack, un vero inno per i "re del metallo", con un ritornello davvero trascinante.
