Lontanissimi dall'attitudine più "sporca" dei Venom e degli Hellhammer, o dal saper spaziare in più generi con una facilità spaventosa come furono capaci i Celtic Frost, i Mercyful Fate sono stati un gruppo che, pur non avendo apportato molte novità nel genere, è riuscita a crearsi una propria identità, continuando a basare la loro musica su tematiche all'epoca decisamente non ben viste, con una tecnica da parte dei musicisti, e dallo stile vocale del proprio cantante, assolutamente indiscussa.
Ovviamente sono l'ultima persona che difenderebbe un gruppo a spada tratta, pur essendo uno dei suoi preferiti, giustificandone ogni sua mossa e dichiarazione, ma mettere in dubbio la qualità di dischi come "Melissa" (1983) e "Don't Break The Oath" (1984) sarebbe alquanto insensato. Una voce come quella di King Diamond, una di quelle che subito al primo ascolto può essere immediatamente amata o odiata, ha contribuito non poco alla fama dei Mercyful Fate, e ovviamente anche alla sua persona.
Una separazione avvenuta troppo presto forse, quella di questa band, avvenuta nel Dicembre del 1984, poichè il chitarrista Hank Shermann avrebbe voluto cambiare genere musicale, spostandosi sul Glam Metal in voga all'epoca, mentre Diamond voleva continuare sullo stile dei precedenti dischi. Per il primo non ci furono grandi occasioni, dopo lo scioglimento del gruppo. Collaborazioni occasionali con gruppi underground, qualche band solista qua e là, ma mai niente capace di portarlo al livello successivo, sfortunatamente.
Per il Re Diamante invece fu diverso. Neanche due anni dopo, formò il suo omonimo progetto solista, e grazie all'apporto del chitarrista Andy Laroque, riuscì a far uscire anno dopo anno, dischi sempre più acclamati dalla critica, e dai fan, come "Abigail" (1987) e "Them" (1988). Nel 1990, dopo la pubblicazione di "The Eye", forse per la pessima produzione da parte della Roadrunner del disco, o forse per altro, Shermann e Diamond decisero di riformare quella che fu, ai tempi, uno dei gruppi più iconici del genere, sia nell' Heavy che nel Black Metal, i Mercyful Fate.
Nel 1993 esce perciò il primo album dopo otto anni di silenzio, "In The Shadows", che musicalmente non si discostò di molto dai suoi due predecessori, perdendo però quella sorta di magia, o atmosfera, che caratterizava questi ultimi. La formazione, rimasta fedele al passato, dà prova di non aver assolutamente perso neanche un po' dello smalto degli inizi, e la produzione non potrebbe essere delle migliori.
"In The Shadows" però presenta una differenza sostanziale , ovvero in quasi ogni canzone è narrata una storia, a volte basata sull'occulto come "Shadows", assolutamente da brividi lo stacco centrale, o "Egypt", con Diamond che riesce perfettamente nell'intento di immedesimarsi nel ruolo di narratore, portandosi dietro l'influenza del suo progetto solista che lo aveva visto, come in questo caso, nel raccontare storie dell'orrore. "The Bell Witch" per esempio, è riferito ad un avvenimento reale, a detta del vocalist, il quale vede uno spirito proveniente dall'inferno torturare a morte ua bambina e suo padre portandoli fino alla pazzia, per poi ucciderli. O ancora, "The Old Oak", ovvero una quercia gigante, che ogni autunno deve soddisfare la sua sete di sangue ipnotizzando e uccidendo ogni essere umano che si fissi a guardarla, facendo scorrere il loro sangue nelle sue radici. Ovviamente da menzioare la straordinaria performance del gruppo, con Shermann e Michael Denner che si scambiano continuamente assoli, ritmiche, giocando sul falsetto e le tonalità rauche di Diamond, intento non solo a raccontare i fatti all'ascoltatore, ma quasi a renderlo partecipe di ogni pezzo. Basata su intervalli acustici ed elettronici, e ben riuscita, è "Room Of The Golden Air", mentre giunge al termine la trilogia che aveva visto Melissa, una strega condannata al rogo ingiustamente, invadere la mente di un uomo fino a farlo uscire fuori di mente con "Is That You, Melissa?", con una prova dietro le pelli da parte di Morten Nielsen assolutamente da menzionare.
Come detto, "In The Shadows" perde in fatto di alcune canzoni meno oscure, se vogliamo, rispetto ad altre, e nel non riuscire a costruire attorno a sè quella sensazione di mistero che si aveva nell'ascolto di "Melissa", ma è veramente cercare il pelo nell'uovo. I Mercyful Fate rimarranno attivi fino al 1999, per poi sciogliersi definitivamente , facendo uscire un best of solo nel 2003. Ma come detto da King Diamond in un'intervista di un paio d'anni fa:
"Una reunion dei Mercyful Fate? Non potrei mai dire di no..."
