Il prossimo 30 aprile saranno passati 25 anni esatti dalla morte di McKinley Morganfield, meglio conosciuto come Muddy Waters, uno dei più grandi bluesman di tutti i tempi e dichiaramente il principale punto di riferimento di molti gruppi rock and roll tra cui su tutti vale ovviamente la pena di menzionare i Rolling Stones (è risaputo che Brian Jones e Keith Richards passassero un sacco di tempo ad ascoltare i suoi dischi cercando di imparare i segreti del suo sound). Non penso del resto ci sia molto da dire su Muddy Waters che non sia già stato detto e raccontato. Nato a Rolling Fork nella contea di Sharkey, stato del Mississippi nell'aprile del 1913, perse la madre quando era solo un bambino e visse il resto della sua infanzia a Clarksdale (la città dove è nato John Lee Hooker) dove cominciò a suonare la chitarra e l'armonica. Lavora nei campi di cotone prima di dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla musica, poi nel 1950 se ne va a Chicago, dove entra nel roster delal mitica Chess Records di Leonard Chess (la figura chiave nell'evoluzione del "Chicago Blues") e diventa il padre del blues della città del vento. Il sound elettrico e potente della sua chitarra divenne subito caratteristico e in breve la sua fama superò i confini di Chicago e dell'Illinois e poi degli Stati Uniti d'America.
La discografia di Muddy Waters è particolarmente corposa. Comprende anche delle registrazioni che risalgono al periodo precedente al suo ingresso nel roster della Chess Records. Vi sono inoltre tutta una serie di registrazioni dal vivo e altre che finora non hanno mai visto la luce. Questo concerto risale al 10 dicembre 1978: fu eseguito per la TV della WDR (la Westdeutscher Rundfunk Koln) durante il programma "Rockpalast" e viene presentato dall'etichetta (la MIG-Music) come una delle migliori performance dal vivo di Waters, nell'occasione accompagnato da Pinetop Perkins al piano, Willie "Big Eyes" Smith alla batteria, Calvin Jones al basso, Jerry Portnoy all'armonica e Luther "Guitar Jr." Johnson e Bob Margolin alle chitarre. Nel disco ci sono dodici canzoni tra cui ovviamente i maggiori successi di Waters, a partire da "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" (scritta da Willie Dixon), poi "Mannish Boy", "Got My Mojo Working" ecc. ecc.
La pubblicazione è completata da una registrazione della Muddy Waters Tribute Band del 23 giugno 1996 e in cui tutti i componenti della vecchia band (ancora in vita e arruolabili) si esibirono per ricordare quell'evento. Ma questa aggiunge poco al valore storico e artistico del recupero di una registrazione dal vivo di un musicista così grande e la cui grandezza e potenza del suono si sente forse di più in una pubblicazione come questa che in quelle in studio.
