Premessa che non ha nulla a che vedere con questa recensione: nelle mie passate recensioni ho dato voti che possono sembrare esagerati, ogni tanto sono stati dati causa giudizi affrettati, altre volte per non fare torto al disco, vedendo 5 dati a raffica ad album che meritano decisamente di meno.
Ad esempio, un mio 5 dato a Deliverance degli Opeth, in una scala da 1 a 10, sarebbe corrisposto ad un 7,5 , mentre un 3 dato ad Hypnotize dei System Of A Down corrisponderebbe ad un 5,5. Ora metterò un giudizio in scala 1-10 e una valutazione un po' imprecisa sempre da 0 a 5. Ora vi starete chiedendo, e a me che cazzo me ne frega? Avete ragione :)
Anno 1988, nella formazione dei texani Pantera, entra un nuovo cantante, un certo Philip Hansen Anselmo. Allora vent'enne e dotato di un'ottima estensione vocale, il giovane cantante dà prova di solidità e potenza, forse la prova di maggior classe della sua carriera. Il suo ingresso nella band è l'inizio della scalata a classifiche e successo in ambito Metal, rendendo i 4 una delle formazioni più popolari e conosciute in tutto il panorama Heavy.
"Power Metal" è un disco energico, aggressivo, melodico, con le palle. E' un buon disco di sano Heavy Metal e non è assolutamente un disco dei Pantera. Anche i componenti stessi rinnegano il loro passato, tanto che sul loro sito ufficiale, la loro carriera inizia con lo splendido successivo "Cowboys From Hell", che segna l'abbandono quasi totale dell'Heavy Metal per un approdo Thrash.
Solo la voce di Anselmo ricorda ancora i vecchi tempi (poi inesorabilmente si abbasserà notevolmente già con i 2 album successivi a causa dell'eccessiva dipendenza alcolica del singer). Tornando al disco in questione, dobbiamo chiederci che cosa c'è dei Pantera, in un disco che gli stessi Pantera rinnegano?
Sicuramente una delle cose che ricorda di più i Pantera degli anni 90 sono gli assoli di Dimebag Darrell (R.I.P.). Veloci, precisi, fluidi e uso della leva a manetta. Il compianto chitarrista era già su un altro pianeta a quel tempo. Rex e Vinnie Paul non sembrano neanche lontani parenti della devastante sezione ritmica dei più famosi dischi successivi, sono più vicini ai Judas Priest. Di Anselmo si è già parlato, quindi passiamo agli episodi migliori di questo gustoso LP, ora difficilmente reperibile.
L'opener "Rock The World" ci mette in mostra tutte le qualità già descritte in precedenza. Basso pompato, batteria cadenzata, ritmo mai elevato e acuti degni di Rob Halford. Diverso il discorso riguardante La title track, veloce e aggressiva, grazie alla doppia-cassa e allo screaming nervoso di Phil. L'album si tinge di AOR nelle melodie di "We'll Meet Again". Voce suadente e ritornello ossessivo. "Down Below" ricorda "Shattered" di "CFH". Bellissimo e forse il migliore del lotto "Hard Ride", pezzo dal suono un po' glam e mainstream, ma assolutamente affascinante. "P.S.T. 88" chiude il disco in modo sorprendente, mostrandoci un lato già decisamente Thrash.
Per chi volesse scoprire non proprio le origini, ma come si concluse il primo corso dei Pantera, "Power Metal" è il disco ideale.
Consigliato a tutti gli appassionati di Heavy.
