Prima che gruppi death-doom come Paradise Lost e Anathema decidessero di cambiare pelle e di alleggerire il proprio angosciante sound, ci fu un precedente storico poco noto ai più. Stiamo parlando dei teutonici Pyogenesis, formazione molto cara a un utente di queste pagine e, almeno ai tempi, autori di ottimi dischi.
Dopo aver debuttato con l'EP "Ignis Creatio" e proseguito con il più soffuso, ma non meno straziante, "Sweet X-Rated Nothing", i Pyogenesis decisero che era giunta l'ora di voltare pagina. Correva l'anno 1996.
Via i growl vocals, che comunque compariranno sporadicamente anche in quest'opera, via i riff mastodontici e via quel look da cupi cerimonieri del metallo gotico. La metamorfosi era compiuta.
Come potrebbe suonare, dunque, un gruppo che ha fatto piazza pulita di tutte quelle caratteristiche riconducibili a un genere ben definito come il metal estremo?
Prendete le melodie dei primi Offspring e coniugatele con il rock malinconico di Alice In Chains e Pearl Jam. Insomma: un disco punk-grunge con alcune aperture ultra metalliche. Mica è brutto!
Certo, il tutto ha un po' il sapore di operazione commerciale, ma ce ne fossero di simili operazioni commerciali oggigiorno!
"Twinaleblood" è un album che mostra la band in un periodo di piena ispirazione, periodo che purtroppo non si ripeterà più nella carriera dei Pyogenesis, considerate le ciofeche pop-punk partorite qualche anno più tardi e considerato il fatto che due membri del gruppo finiranno alla corte dei Liquido (sì, proprio quei Liquido!).
Canzoni da segnalare? Io direi l'orecchiabile ma mai banale "Undead", brano che apre il disco e subito ci fa capire quanti e quali cambiamenti sono stati apportati. Si prosegue con il pop-punk della title track e si giunge al cospetto di quella che, almeno a parere del sottoscritto, è una delle migliori composizioni del disco: "Weeping Sun". L'impronta grunge è pesante ma, all'improvviso, irrompe un canto gutturale, quasi growl. Ormai lo sanno tutti, a me non piace analizzare gli album traccia-per-traccia, quindi vi elencherò quei brani che più mi hanno colpito.
Tra questi, sicuramente, se la giocano l'aggressiva "God Complex" e "Mutz Umbst Erben", una sorta di tributo alle vecchie sonorità proposte dai Pyogenesis. Anche "Abstract Life" fa bella mostra di se in questo vortice sonoro.
Come già accennato, un disco che coniuga egregiamente le sonorità che all'epoca andavano per la maggiore (pop punk e grunge) con sferzate di buon vecchio metallo. Melodia e rabbia. Un'opera forse non fondamentale ma senza ombra di dubbio gustosa e coinvolgente. Un'opera che, distanza di ventitre anni, risulta ancora fresca.
