" A Kind of Magic" esce nel 1986, e inanellando una hit dopo l'altra ottiene un successo commerciale clamoroso, segnando per certi versi una ripresa dopo alcuni episodi precedenti, giudicati dalla critica un pò incerti.
Per quanto se ne dica, in questo disco non c'è NULLA che possa dirsi rock, nulla. È un album pop. Con "A Kind of Magic", i Queen si tuffano (o affondano?) appieno in un climax commerciale, imbastarditi ormai completamente delle loro radici glam, che solo dieci anni prima li portava a scrivere canzoni storiche come "Somebody to Love".
E' un prodotto parecchio eterogeneo, dato che è composto da nove pezzi assolutamente disgiunti da un qualsiasi piano concettuale e musicale comune. Da una parte abbiamo quelli più melodici e stucchevoli ("One Vision", "A Kind of Magic", "Pain is So Close to Pleasure"), dall'altra una specie di pop incazzato, diciamo pure abbastanza tamarro, spacciato per una sorta di Hard Rock targato Brian May ("Princess of the Universe", "Gimme the Prize", "Don't Lose Your Head") e per finire le tre bellissime ballate ("One Year of Love", "Friends Will Be Friends" e "Who Wants to Live Forever"). Peccato, mi sarebbe piaciuto sentire altri pezzi come questi ultimi. Se l'album fosse stato tutto così sarebbe venuto fuori un capolavorone. Mi permetto una parentesi,"One Year of Love" è straordinaria. L'unica che in un mood decisamente allegro e sprezzante riesce a tirare fuori quella malinconia da bar che mi piace tanto e che, almeno per qualche minuto, allontana il disco dalle luci della festa per portarlo direttamente alla fine di essa, in uno sfondo molto più raccolto e toccante. Curiosamente, Deacon decise di sostituire la chitarra con un assolo di sax dopo una discussione avuta con May, e io ringrazio perché quella parte di sax è davvero incantevole; probabilmente il chitarrista avrebbe rovinato tutto, dato che ogni cosa che tocca qui distrugge, o quasi.
Tutto sommato, non vedo il motivo di bocciare un disco del genere, che tra l'altro ha prestato ben sei brani alla colonna sonora di un gran film come Highlander. Certo dipende dalla prospettiva in cui lo si guarda. Se fosse stato un lavoro di una normalissima pop band di incipriati parrucconi del decennio in questione avrei potuto dare tranquillamente un quattro, ma siccome ci sono in mezzo i Queen e le cose non mi sono molto chiare, opto per un onesto tre. Chiaramente, questi non sono i Queen che piacciono a me, ma in tutta franchezza "A Kind of Magic" mi sembra un disco godibile, e apprezzabile anche da parte dei fan più radicali.
Semplicemente la sua caratteristica principale è di essere divertente; chissà, forse non era questo l'obiettivo che la band si era prefissata, ma d'altra parte di obiettivi concreti in questo disco, se escludiamo quello delle vendite, non ce ne sono. Prendetelo come viene, e divertitevi anche voi.

La piena rinascita dei Queen avviene nel 1986, anno in cui vede la luce "A Kind Of Magic".
"Who Wants To Live Forever" è un capolavoro di grande spessore e profondità.
