La piena rinascita dei Queen avviene nel 1986, anno in cui vede la luce "A kind of magic". L'album accompagna il film "Highlander" in maniera diversa dallo scempio di "Flash Gordon" dove le tracce erano attaccate troppo al film ed erano oltremodo noiose.
Qui c'è praticamente di tutto:
si parte con quattro voci oscure, un intro che spacca di brutto e l'energica One Vision che apre il lavoro.
Segue la title track, A Kind Of Magic, una delle migliori canzoni di Roger Taylor dove i Queen passano a un pop tipico degli anni'80.
A seguire un motivo ricorrente in "Highlander", di stile e genere completamente diverso dalle prime due canzoni: quello di One Year Of Love, dolce brano d'amore dove nei momenti più intensi spunta un buon sassofono suonato da Steve Gregory.
Poi c'è un singolo di scarso successo (anche se è stato pubblicato solo in Olanda, Germania e pochi altri paesi): Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, altra canzone sottovalutata con cui il gruppo cerca di minimizzare le pene d'amore della canzone precedente, è molto vicina per il falsetto a Cool Cat ed è un ennesima prova di bravura di Freddie.
L' "abbondante" Friends Will Be Friends (anche questa implicata in qualche pubblicità di biscotti) è in tipico stile Queen anche se in certi tratti è troppo "pesante".
Un capolavoro è la traccia successiva, anch'essa celebre, Who Wants To Live Forever, canzone di grande spessore e profondità grazie soprattutto alla presenza dell'orchestra e dal passaggio dalla lieve voce di Brian a quella forte di Freddie Mercury.
Poi c'è Gimme The Prize, molto allacciata al film e specialmente al Kurgan's Theme che si distingue per un buon lavoro di Brian alla chitarra specialmente per quello che riguarda l'avvio.
La traccia numero otto è l'"incompresa" Don't Lose Your Head dove veramente incalzante è il ritmo azzeccato di Roger Taylor; la canzone è oscura come quasi tutte le altre canzoni del suo autore e in generale un gran bel contributo del batterista all'album.
L'ultima effettiva canzone è un gioiello del rock anch'esso molto legato al film (nella videoclip che lo accompagna Freddie e Christopher Lambert, il protagonista del film, danno vita a un finto scontro): sto parlando di Princes Of The Universe.
L'undicesima e la dodicesima traccia sono A Kind Of Magic Of Magic e Friends Will Be Friends Will Be Friends. No, non ho sbagliato a scrivere e nemmeno mi sono rincoglionito: sono due mix altamente inutili e noiosi delle rispettive tracce. L'unica extra track che si salva è Forever di Brian May, una bella versione strumentale di Who Wants To Live Forever.
Ma queste ultime tracce poco contano di fronte all'effettiva grandezza di questo fortunanto disco che conferma la loro piena maturità e dimostra il loro pieno controllo di un disparato numero di generi musicali. Dovrebbe essere questo l'obbiettivo finale di ogni gruppo.

Questo disco immortale ha suoni geniali che hanno rinnovato il techno-rock dove la voce di Freddie si distende in tutta la sua potenza di fuoco.
Se fossi in voi farei mio questo disco immortale, e le 400 mila anime al Wembley Stadium quella sera ne sono la dimostrazione più lampante.
