I 4 della "Regina" si presentano alle porte degli anni '80 con un certo furore, c'è aria di ridimensionamento nel loro sound e non solo, anche dell'immagine (Taylor,Deacon e Mercury si tagliano i capelli, successivamente il leader farà spuntare i celeberrimi baffi che lo accompagneranno in carriera fino a fine anni '80).
"The Game" ovvero un misto di pseudo rockabilly dal retrogusto funky, viene prodotto tra il giugno '79 e maggio '80. I 4 si affidano al nuovo tecnico del suono, il tedesco Reinhold Mack che con lui andranno alla ricerca di un vigore sonoro che sorprende i fans dando inizio all'anticamera del cambiamento utilizzando il sintetizzatore (anche se limitatamente) cercando di evitare qualsiasi suono superfluo.
Controverso, ambiguo, bistratto, si parte, inizia "The Game", appunto il gioco, un duro gioco che li porterà primi nella classifica USA sfondando addirittura nelle emittenti radio "di colore". "Play the Game" è un brano che non rinnega il passato settantiano della band,con il solito pianoforte e gli spumeggianti cori in primo piano, ma una chitarra più tagliente del solito. La seconda traccia è "Dragon Attack" e qui, signori miei, giù il cappello, si va a scuola di basso dal signor Deacon, la parte batteria concentrata sul charleston che poi si impegna in una improvvisazione che ricorda la marcia di una banda medievale, voce cattiva e graffiante e May ci regala "lo sputo di fuoco del dragone" prodotto dalla sua Red Special con un assolo a dir poco "maleducato". Ma la chicca ad alto potenziale distruttivo è la terza traccia: "Another One Bites the Dust", sempre opera di Deacon che pure qui si cimenta in un riff che diventerà una perla nei live della band,tutti gli strumenti si intrecciano in maniera paradisiaca, la chitarra puramente funky, un solo aggettivo: Immortale. "Need Your Loving Tonight" è un pezzo molto "zuccherino", ottima per scaldare la serata durante il tragitto in macchina prima di un appuntamento di fuochi e fiamme con la propria donna.
Nel "bel mezzo del cammin di codesto album" troviamo un pezzo spudoratamente rockabilly completamente scritto da Mercury in bagno del Bayerischerhof Hotel di Monaco, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" sembra un ritorno al passato ai tempi di un certo Elvis Presley, un vero omaggio al Rock n' Roll come testimoniano le note di una chitarra pulita e a dir poco perfetta e come si potrà vedere nel video in cui i 4 si presentano in abbigliamento da puri biker. Il sesto pezzo è "Rock It (Prime Jive)", Mercury inizia con alcuni gorgheggi per poi dare spazio alla voce ruvida e graffiante di Taylor in una base ben spinta dalle tecnologie e dal retrogusto dance e funky. Si arriva poi a "Don't Try Suicide", mani, basso, chitarra, cori, un pezzo puramente commerciale ma che di certo non istiga al suicidio durante l'ascolto, qui Deacon da l'ennesima prova della sua impeccabile magia tra le quattro corde in questo disco. "Sail Away Sweet Sister" è la dolcissima dedica di May (che si cimenta in questa ballad anche come voce principale) alla sorella che non ha mai avuto, un distillato di fascinosa classe nel bagaglio dei Queen che in seguito hanno influenzato molte band. La nona traccia è "Coming Soon" che non è di certo una track basilare, ma comunque apprezzabile per il suo retrogusto un pelino metallico, pezzo che può essere di ispirazione a band come i Motley Crue nel periodo delle prime incisioni. Conclude questo "giocoso" album la dolcissima ballata "Save Me" con la cantata strappalacrime di Mercury che ti coccola con i soliti cori più "Queeniani" che mai, sicuramente una della più belle ballate nel repertorio della band.
"The Game" fu l'album della svolta anche se suscitò inevitabili perplessità dalla critica e dai fans della prima ora, influenzò non poco i lavori successivi, ma bisogna affermare che anche se nella discografia dei Queen è uno degli album più sottovalutati, in quanto non è propriamente hard rock come gli album precedenti, è sicuramente un capolavoro per il rock più commerciale, concludendo è più che giusto dire che il lavoro più che apprezzabile per il coraggioso tentativo di rimettersi ancora in discussione dopo quasi 10 anni di carriera.

Il disco datato 1979, costituisce sicuramente una svolta nella carriera Queen, oltre che nella musica del tempo.
Another One Bites The Dust. Epico. non tanto per la canzone quanto per la sua storia, per quello che ha fatto, per i generi a cui ha dato vita.

La band che faceva scrivere dietro ogni album "no synth" evidentemente conscia delle nuove tendenze, proporrà sin da questo album in poi basi molto elettroniche.
L’estrema semplicità (basso, batteria e molta elettronica), ha reso la traccia... la più conosciuta del gruppo (almeno negli USA).
