Nonostante, o forse proprio a causa del fatto che, il cosiddetto shoegaze sia uno dei generi piú in voga presso un certo tipo di pubblico "indie/alternativo“, su DeBaser queste sonorità sembrano riscontrare meno interesse, esclusi i due grossi numi tutelari del genere, ovvero My Bloody Valentine e Slowdive.
Oggi non si contano oggi i gruppi che cercano di rileggere, in chiave più o meno moderna (vedasi gli Horrors oppure i Toy, giusto per citare due delle nuove leve più popolari in Italia), sebbene spesso declinandola e banalizzandola in un formato più canonico e melodico, tanto da sconfinare spesso nell’imparentato dream-pop.
Ebbene, se molti decidono, senza poi perdersi in effetti nulla di seriamente epocale, di saltare a pié pari l’ondata revivalista (che segue quella "new-wave di Interpol ed affini), perlomeno agli albori il genere presenta ancora un paio di gruppi che sicuramente valgono la pena di essere rispolverati. Tra questi, subito dopo i pesi massimi già citati, vengono sicuramente i Ride, padri del filone più prettamente rocchettaro del genere. A differenza dei piú psichedelici MBV e delle sofisticate ed eteree atmosfere oniriche degli Slowdive, qui ci muoviamo a un livello più fisico e terreno, le canzoni sono canzoni e le melodie sempre presenti, sebbene coperte dal solito strato di rumori e distorsioni. Non per questo ci troviamo peró di fronte ad un gruppo banale o da ignorare, nononstante la deriva commerciale successiva le prime opere sono assolutamente meritevoli, piene di ottime canzoni in grado di coniugare energia ed accessibilità, che suonano ancora fresche ed ispirate pure oggi, dopo più di 20 anni.
"Smile", uscito nel 1990, stesso anno del bellissimo esordio su album del gruppo, il purtroppo spesso dimenticato "Nowhere“ e raccoglie i primi due EP del gruppo, "Ride" e "Play", che presentano, rispetto all’album citato, composizioni un filino più grezze e tirate e rappresenta, nei gusti personali del recensore, il non plus ultra della band insieme al debutto. Come già detto i Ride sono poi, ahimè, andati a semplificare eccessivamente la propria proposta, sedotti dalle sirene del consenso mainstream (ma anche i due EP "Fall" e "Vapour Trail" rimangono molto interessanti), nulla però potrà mai mettere in ombra la bellezza degli inizi del loro percorso.
