Nel 1984, reduci dall'enorme successo del precedente "Blackout" (1982) gli Scorpions realizzano una perla assoluta dell'Heavy Metal, l'ultimo album di un'ottima seria formata da: "Lovedrive", "Animal Magnetism", "Blackout" e, appunto, questo mitico "Love At First Sting" (ho citato solo i dischi con Matthias Jabs alla chitarra, altrimenti sarei partito da "Fly To The Rainbow").
L'album parte con la bellissima "Bad Boys Running Wild", aperta da un'intro di chitarra e dotata di un ottimo ritornello, con tanto di cantato "cattivo" (se mi è concesso il termine) di Klaus Meine. Davvero un'apertura col botto, seguita da un'emblema dell'Heavy Metal di valore assoluto, penso che molti di voi sapranno già di cosa sto parlando, ovvero la grandisima "Rock You Like An Hurricane". Aperta da un riff immortale con tanto di mini-assolo di Jabs, presenta uno dei ritornelli più famosi e coinvolgenti della storia della musica, e mentre un ispiratissimo Klaus Meine urla energicamente: "ROCK YOU LIKE AN HURRICANE!" parte un grandissimo solo di Jabs. Anche dopo "Rock You Like An Hurricane" il livello qualitativo si mantiene altissimo grazie a canzoni come "I'm Leaving You", che presenta ancora una volta il solito, mitico solo di chitarra, "Coming Home", aperta dalla sola voce di Meine accompagnata da un'arpeggio soave di Jabs per poi esplodere in tutta la sua potenza, e "The Same Thrill", leggermente inferiore alle altre ma comunque sopra la media (unica pecca il ritornello). Si giunge così ad un altro classicissimo della band teutonica, ovvero la bellissima "Big City Nights". Aperta anche lei da un mini-solo di chitarra si rivela essere una canzone gradevolissima, molto orecchiabile, melodica e con un ritornello semplice quanto efficace. Dopo una prova più che buona nella coppia "As Soon As The Good Times Roll" - "Crossfire" si giunge alla canzone migliore dell'album, la famosissima ballad "Still Loving You". Questa commovente ballad è uno dei migliori pezzi degli Scorpions, se non addirittura il migliore. Aperta da un malinconico arpeggio, è in una parola perfetta: nelle strofe la voce triste e sussurrata di Klaus Meine sortisce un grande effetto, il ritornello colpisce l'ascoltatore al cuore (avanti, in fondo chi non si è mai commosso ascoltando questa ballad?) e non ho assolutamente nessun dubbio nel dire che l'assolo finale (stavolta ad opera di Rudolf Schenker) sia il migliore e il più toccante da parte della band.
Purtroppo, come accade spesso, il miglior album segna anche l'inizio del declino, non è fatta eccezione per questo magnifico e pregevole album. Infatti, dal prossimo "Savage Amusement", gli Scorpions comporranno musica sempre più commerciale, fino a raggiungere il declino assoluto con "Pure Instinct" (1996) e "Eye To Eye" (1999), per poi riprendersi con il roccioso "Unbreakable" (2004).
Siccome è praticamente impossibile aspettarsi un nuovo "Love At First Sting" in questi anni, dimentichiamo gli album citati poco prima e continuiamo a sognare e godere con le note di "Rock You Like An Hurricane", "Big City Nights" e "Still Loving You".
