Disseminate in questo campo di battaglia musicale - ed internazionale -, circoscrivibile come musica pop, sussistono ancora deliziose personalità che purtroppo non sono in grado di far percepire validamente l'eco delle proprie produzioni, vuoi per la tendenza odierna all'esagerazione estetico-visiva, vuoi ancora per case discografiche alle spalle assolutamente incapaci di gestire siffatti talenti. E' cosi che alcuni artisti, partiti con ottimi successi, brani in top-ten e notorietà alle stelle, si trovano al secondo lavoro in studio a dover fare i conti con un pubblico di voltagabbana e di dissidenti, costretti dunque a vestire i panni di meteore da relegare in nicchie sempre più piccole e misere.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor fa purtroppo parte di questo schieramento: una sorta di graziosa Kylie Minogue versione UK, tendente alla sobrietà e ad una razionale semplicità in fatto di costumi, sonorità e scenografie di contorno, Sophie partì con una tripletta di hits (Take Me Home, Murder On The Dancefloor, Get Over You), nonché con l'album di debutto Read My Lips nel lontano 2002, anno in cui le atmosfere disco-dance si erano già accese con i successi della "controparte" australiana. Tuttavia, con i successivi lavori, l'artista inglese non è più riuscita a ottenere gli sfavillanti numeri del primo disco, giungendo all'attuale status di indie-performer con l'ultimo Make a Scene. Tralasciando comunque la bieca analisi commercial-finanziaria della sua carriera, la Ellis-Bextor non ha affatto gettato nel pattume la qualità dele sue produzioni, ed anzi ha saputo affrancarsi dall'esclusività pop-disco di Read My Lips verso approdi sempre più variegati e sopraffini e verso sounds ricercati e raffinati.
Trip The Light Fantastic, datato 2007, è probabilmente la punta di questa imperdibile "ricerca dell'eterogeneità" da parte della bella Sophie: un lavoro dalle tinte e dai sounds contrastanti, autentico mix di elettropop retrò (con l'occhio perennemente rivolto alla stagione eighties), new-wave, disco-dance, rock melodico, funky e soul. Tanto è molteplice il catalogo sonoro attinto per l'occasione, quanto è effimera la parvenza di "fritto misto" musicale: dodici tracce che scivolano via nella maniera più semplice e schietta possibile, senza troppe aberrazioni e sconvolgimenti uditivi, una manciata di brani in cui il connubio fra la sontuosa voce di Sophie e le melodie di tinta funzionano perfettamente.
L'apertura dell'album è affidata alla piacevole dinamicità del primo singolo Catch You, uptempo rock-elettronica dai contorni retrò-evergreen che lascia spazio a Me And My Immagination, diretto riferimento alla Ellis-Bextor disco-dance, regina di una febbre del sabato sera anni '00. Si passa dunque alla sensuale malizia electropop di If I Can't Dance, alla marcia folk-militare di frivoli synth in If You Go e alle strizzatine house-techno dark di imprescindibile ispirazione 8os di China Heart, arricchite da un breakdown di corposi archi.
Con Today The Sun's On Us, romantico lento, si apre il capitolo relativo alle slow/midtempo di fattura pop-rock, orientamento percettibile con particolare menzione nell'atmosfera da soundtrack evergreen di The Distance Between Us, nell'allegrotto doo-woop di Love Is Here, come pure nel retrò-funkeggiante accompagnamento da cabaret di Only One. Chiude il tutto l'elevazione dance romantico-passionale simil-coronamento d'amore finale di What Have We Started.
Sebbene privato degli accompagnamenti in pompa magna riservati a personalità pop-mainstream ben più blasonate, il terzo album in studio di Sophie Ellis-Bextor stupisce (e non poco) per la sua semplicità e rigorosità creatività, per le variegate (tuttavia non palesemente scopiazzate) ispirazioni e per l'equilibrio derivato dal mix di sonorità sopra citato, paragonabile all'incompresa eleganza del "vicino" X di Kylie Minogue, anch'esso rilasciato nel 2007. Per chi non ama il pop (o meglio non ne apprezza le macchinazioni estetiche di background), questo è probabilmente l'album di cui ha bisogno per rivalutare un genere fin troppo indebitamente generalizzato e terribilmente inflazionato.
