Quell'ondata nostalgica che ha generato in Svezia gruppi come Graveyard, Witchcraft e Dead Man, aveva già dato alla luce un esempio di stoner rock/hard rock che affondava le proprie radici nella tradizione degli anni '70. Furono gli Spiritual Beggars gli apripista della "revival wave" scandinava: nati nell'ormai lontano 1992, il loro omonimo album li proiettò nell'Olimpo dell'underground europeo, grazie anche al songwriting e alla classe di Michael Amott, axeman di Carnage, Carcass e Arch Enemy.
Non sono precisate le ragioni per cui il chitarrista abbia deciso di mettere su una band tanto lontana da quanto suonava in quegli anni, ma il risultato che è venuto fuori lascia in secondo piano i dubbi sulla nascita degli Spiritual Beggars. Il gruppo ha infatti dimostrato con il passare degli anni di meritarsi la buona schiera di "adepti" che segue ormai stabilmente la band. Risultato ottenuto con ottimi lavori come "Another way to shine" e "Ad astra".
L'uscita del bassista Roger Nilsson dal combo anticipa "Demons" (2005), il sesto capitolo discografico. Il suo sostituto venne trovato in Sharlee D'Angelo (Arch Enemy), l'ultimo elemento mancante per poter iniziare la stesura dei brani di Demons.
I nomi che figurano all'interno del gruppo appartengono al metal estremo (c'è anche Wiberg degli Opeth), ma è piacevolmente sorprendente scoprire che nonostante il background dei musicisti presenti, Demons risulti comunque "fresco" e lontano dalle normali abitudini musicali dei vari membri. Lyrics e suoni immediati per un hard rock/heavy metal/stoner rock di semplice assimilazione. Attenzione: non orecchiabile o infarcito di soluzioni AOR, perchè gli Spiritual Beggars hanno la propria impronta. La potenza dell'iniziale "Throwing your life away" promette tre furiosi minuti di headbanging, mentre "One man army" ci mostra l'anima melodica e allo stesso tempo hard & heavy della formazione svedese. Soluzione più stoner oriented per "Dying every day" buon esempio della Bibbia musicale degli Spiritual Beggars.
Demons sottolinea quindi tutti quelli che erano stati i buoni segnali inviati dalla band già nel passato. L'album in questione avanza traballando qua e là (ottimi pezzi affiancati da altri non entusiasmanti) ma conferma ancora una volta la bontà della proposta degli svedesi, mai in negativo nella loro storia. A contribuire alla riuscita del cd anche Janne Christoffersson (anche singer dei Grand Magus) al suo ultimo lavoro con i Beggars prima di essere sostituito dall'altrettanto valido Apollo Papathanasio.
Band e disco da riscoprire, così come l'intero sottobosco di nostalgia che sta pervadendo (e che ha pervaso) la Svezia. Voto 3 e mezzo.
