Dopo la registrazione del loro secondo album, Machine, Koichi Fukuda (il chitarrista) decise di lasciare la band per spendere tempo con la sua famiglia ed ad inseguire altre oppurtunità musicali. Per sostituire Fukuda, venne chiamato, Tripp Eisen, appartenente all'ex gruppo dei Dope. Machine fu pubblicato il 22 Maggio 2001 e per riscuotere più successo, poco dopo, gli Static-X cominciarono a lavorare sul loro terzo album, Shadow Zone, questa volta con l'adempimento di Eisen. Comunque, prima che potessero iniziare a registrare, Ken Jay lasciò il gruppo a causa di controversie e discordanze musicali e politiche. Così come batterista provvisorio, fu scelto Josh Freese degli A Perfect Circle e The Vandals. Più tardi, Nick Oshiro, ex componente dei Seether, fu scelto come rimpiazzo di Ken Jay e come batterista permanente della band. Durante la produzione dell'album, Jonathan Davis dei KoRn, chiamò Wayne Static come cantante per una sua canzone scritta per la colonna sonora del film "La Regina Dei Dannati", intitolata "Not Meant For Me". Shadow Zone fu più tardi pubblicato il 7 Ottobre 2003.
Accidenti che bella partenza con "Destroy All", come al solito incazzati, vogliono già distruggere tutto subito, ma per fortuna interviene l'auto-controllo, "Control It", stupenda, bellissima, la prima gemma dell'album. Ma ecco, proprio quando la rabbia viene domata con odio e non di certo con amore...arriva un nuovo dolore, "New Pain", vedo ombre e un grande dolore nella mia testa, mi hai detto quello che volevi e mi hai odiato, poi mi hai ucciso, ma non sono morto per causa tua: il mio cuore e la mia mente erano già in fiamme da prima. "Shadow Zone", sono caduto nell'ombra, ma non sono triste, anzi mi piace questa oscurità, lasciami solo, dentro sono morto, la mia mente, il mio cuore...decisione giusta, o sbagliata, è questa la causa della mia rabbia. "Dead World", qualcosa in me sta cambiando, cosa mi sta succedendo? dove mi trovo? sono solo, questo mondo è morto, e dal momento in cui sono l'unico essere vivente, questo è il mio mondo, sono il re di questo mondo tetro ed oscuro. Ritornato alla realtà, fuori dalla mia ombra sono diventato un mostro, "Monster", vedo tutte bugie nei vostri occhi!. Esco un attimo dalla storia che ho improvvisato ascoltando le traccie per dire che fin qui le canzoni sono state tutte ottime, ma ora arriva la punta di diamante: "The Only", meravigliosa, dolce ma potente, non ho parole per descriverla in breve, la considero la migliore canzone che han fatto sin'oggi. Anche "Kill Your Idols" è bellissima. Fin qui il disco si è dimostrato eccezzionale, è sia incazzato che melodico. Ci manteniamo sempre al di sopra della media con "All In Wait", molto carina anche questa. E dopo che tutti sono stati in attesa, ecco ora la "Otsego" di turno, "Otsegolectric" che non è male, anzi è molto meglio degli "Otsego" precedenti. "So" è la canzone più tranquilla e melodica del lotto, triste, dolce e malinconica, ma la sua dolcezza è tale d'avermi rapito, non può non piacermi. Wayne si prende un minuto e mezzo di pausa con il pezzo strumentale "Transmission". Ed ecco, l'ultima gemma, la mia seconda preferita in assoluto, la meravigliosa e spettacolare "Invincible",
