Dopo il successo dell'LP d'esordio "Suede", le pomposità del successivo "Dog man star", e l'abbandono del chitarrista/compositore Butler riecco i nuovi Suede di "Coming up".
"Coming Up" è sicuramente un caposaldo per la discografia dei Suede in quanto da un lato traccia una linea di demarcazione tra il sound dei primi suede che molto aveva preso dagli Smith e da Morrisey e dall'altro delinea la nuova formazione che si avvale della composizione dei nuovi arrivati ovvero: Oakes alle chitarre e Codling alle tastiere.
La premessa è d'obbligo in quanto se i primi due album sono figli della coppia Anderson-Butler il presente "Coming Up" è a buon diritto figlio della penna, per lo meno da un punto di vista strettamente musicale, dell'adolescente Oakes.
Il disco apre con una trascinante "Trash" sorta di manifesto glam pop degli anni '90 che in qualche modo prepara l'ascoltatore alla mini rivoluzione in casa Suede. Il brano è pervaso dai riff del sinth di Neil Codling e dalla voce metallica del cantante cosi come la successiva "Filmstar" con l'aggiunta questa volta di una batteria dalle sonorità elettroniche e da un ritornello dalle atmosfere riprese pari pari dal miglior Bowie.
"Lazy" invece ci propone una composizione del solo Anderson che ci delizia con un brano molto brit dal beat saltellante. "By the sea" (altro brano del solo Anderson) è una delicata composizione al pianoforte che delizia per i famigerati e sensuali "she" del cantante.
Brano meno bello dell'intero album è "She" un martellante pezzo che non porta da nessuna parte cosi come "Starcrazy" che nascondono il basso livello dietro una produzione accativante di riff di chitarre e batterie ognipresenti.
Pezzo capolavoro del disco è invece "Beautiful ones" con l'arpeggio iniziale di Oakes, la splendida voce di Anderson che si arrampica su specchi glam, e un testo sugli adolescenti inglesi degli anni '90 che lo portano a essere anche uno dei migliori brani dei Suede e del brit pop tutto.
"Picnic by motorway" è una splendida composizione sognante e acida, con una delle migliori prestazioni vocali di Anderson, un atmosfera fumogena e trasognante fatta di veicoli e picnic ai bordi di un autostrada. Uno dei migliori pezzi del disco. "The chemistry Between us" è una deliziosa ballata con tanto di orchestra e di maliziosi falsetti corali e di Lalalala. A chiudere il disco la delicata "Saturday night" brano grazioso, con un bel arpeggio di chitarra, un ottima produzione orchestrale e ancira una volta un testo tipicamente Suediano.
Il disco è molto compatto grazie alla produzione e all'uso di tonalità simili lungo l'intero album. I suoni sono spesso gli stessi, le timbriche della chitarra si ripetono lungo tutto il disco cosi come la iperprodotta voce di Brett Anderson.
Sicuramente un disco piu' accessibile del precedente "Dog man star" ma analizzando il livello dei singoli estratti dal Lp sicuramente un passo indietro rispetto a "Stay together" singolo a firma Butler. Il successivo "Head Music" battera sonorità piu' elettroniche (anche perchè sarà per lo più a firma del tastierista Colding) e quindi si può affermare a buon diritto che "Coming Up" sia il vero disco da conservare dei suede.
Bello, glam, trasognante, notturno, da ascoltare in macchina lungo le strade desolate degli amori adolescenziali di una volta.
Erano gli anni '90....

Il singolo "Beautiful Ones" fu un eccellente tentativo di coniugare una certa concisione rock con il classico allure glammeggiante del gruppo londinese.
I Suede che più ci conquistarono il cuore, quelli sognanti, romantici come la voce di Brett, sono presenti in brani commoventi come "By the sea" e "Lovely day".

Il sound dei Suede è radicalmente cambiato, ha acquisito una freschezza ed un’orecchiabilità inaspettate.
Per molti 'Coming Up' è il miglior disco dei Suede, sicuramente è il loro capolavoro del tanto temuto dopo-Butler.
