Ted Nugent – Double Live Gonzo (1977)
Perchè un bassista vegano, sostenitore dei diritti degli animali, pacifista, dovrebbe voler fare la recensione di un disco suonato e cantato da un chitarrista cacciatore convinto, carnivoro assoluto, ultraconservatore e amante della guerra? Semplice, perché la musica e la politica sono due cose molto diverse e perché il musicista di cui parlo è indubbiamente unico. Proprio di unicità si deve parlare quando si pensa a Mr Theodocious Atrocious, alias Ted Nugent, rocker nativo della famosa e folle città di Detroit. Attivo negli anni 60 con gli Amboy Dukes, il nostro uomo intraprende una fortunata e ispirata carriera solista a partire dal disco omonimo, datato 1975. Seguono almeno altri 3 dischi unici, tra cui lo strafamoso “Cat Scratch Fever”, e tantissimi altri lavori piu’ o meno blues o metal. Ma il disco di cui vi parlo in questa sede è un altro, un album che ha portato la fama di Ted oltre il successo di pubblico. E’ uno di quei capolavori che una volta ascoltato rimane per sempre nel cuore, come un film di Michael Cimino o un quadro di Bosch. Il titolo è “Double Live Gonzo” (1977), ed è uno dei concerti piu’ pazzi e adrenalinici che sentirete nella vostra vita. La cosa piu’ peculiare per tutta la durata del concerto (che è un melange di varie serate del tour di “Cat Scratch Fever”) è il colore che lo contraddistingue, il nero. Si, nero, perché rispetto alle versioni in studio, i brani risultano piu’ articolati ma anche piu’ sulfurei nelle loro versioni dilatate da concerto. “Cat Scratch Fever”, “Great White Buffalo”, “Baby Please Don’t Go”, sono tutte hit che si snocciolano tra brani piu’ di cuore come la pietra miliare che rappresenta “Hibernation”, brano che permette a Nugent di mostrare il suo lato piu’ intimistico, o l’epica “Stranglehold”. Su questa canzone va fatta una premessa: è stata scritta per metà dal bassista Rob Grange, e si sente. Il brano, imperniato su una linea di basso innovativa, è una cannonata. Il solido bassista offre anche un breve assolo che è entrato nella leggenda del rock duro, e che ogni uomo votato al quattro corde dovrebbe conoscere a memoria. A cantare i brani è l’abile Derek St Holmes, che è anche secondo chitarrista, alternato dallo stesso Nugent. A mio parere il secondo è anche piu’ bravo come cantante, ma Holmes teneva testa a Ted quindi che dire, tanto di cappello anche solo per questo. Il batterista è l’inglese Cliff Davies, un musicista che resterà con Nugent per un po’ e che con brio si scatena dietro i tamburi. Tutte le altre canzoni presenti sono immortali e leggendarie, tra cui la misogina “Wang Dang Sweet Poontang”, la straripante “Motor City Madhouse”, dedicata alla fumosa Detroit, e la guerreggiante e misteriosa “Stormtroopin”. Inoltre, “Just What The Doctor Ordered” e “Gonzo” sono dei bellissimi inni al vivere la musica come droga, la prima, e come diversivo per la noia, la seconda. Il nostro chitarrista (Ted) suona come un indemoniato e canta come un Charles Bukowski del microfono, di donne, di guerra, di leggende indiane e di omicidi. Il gruppo lo accompagna facendosi sentire a dovere, soprattutto l’inarrestabile Rob Grange, e gli 85 minuti del concerto volano che è una meraviglia.
Heavy Blues, cosi’ si puo’ definire lo stile del buon Ted, anche se a tratti anche Heavy Metal non è eccessivo da dire. Dopo una serie di dischi in studio che costruirono un seguito folto e fedele, e questo doppio live che ne consacro’ l’immagine a livello mondiale, purtroppo Nugent ebbe la mal calibrata idea di cacciare Grange e St Holmes dalla band, cosa che cambio’ per sempre le sorti della sua carriera. Senza l’immancabile apporto dei due infatti, Ted non è mai piu’ riuscito a toccare quelle vette che la band originale era capace di toccare ad ogni concerto. St Holmes tornerà a piu’ riprese ma l’inarrivabile Grange non collaborerà mai piu’ con Nugent, e se pensiamo che grazie al bassista esiste un brano come “Stranglehold”, è un crimine.
