Formati nel 1974 da Edward Tudor-Pole, discendente diretto di Henry VIII (Enrico VIII), i Tenpole Tudor riuscirono a sfondare solo nel 1980-81, quando il punk aveva già lasciato il posto alla new wave. Questo gruppo deve quindi essere fatto rientrare nel post-punk, anche se è difficile etichettarlo veramente. Diciamo che si tratta di una band che fa del buon rock'n'roll; solo che il loro gira a 78 giri anziché a 33.
Due chitarre (Bob Kingston e Dick Crippen), una batteria (l'occhialuto Gary Long) e, a guidare il tutto, l'istrionesco Eddie Tenpole (così si faceva chiamare il loro frontmann) che balla, e salta e fa un mucchio di esercizi acrobatici; canta anche, ma in un modo tutto suo... punk, appunto.
L'energia scatenata dal quartetto fin dalla data della fondazione non impressionò oltremodo le case discografiche: nessun contratto fino al 1980, se si esclude un piccolo lavoro (uno striminzito single) per la Korovo Records. La breccia tra le nubi si aprì solo dopo che Eddie venne contattato da Sid Vicious dei Sex Pistols per sostituire ai vocals Johnny Lyndon, che era sul piede di partenza verso un'esistenza meno sregolata e quasi borghese. Sid Vicious morì appena tre settimane dopo, ma Eddie Tenpole fece in tempo a partecipare al film semi-documentaristico sui Pistols The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle, esibendosi tra l'altro in una sconquassata versione di "Rock Around The Clock" e nella propria canzone "Who Killed Bambi". L'hyper attorno a questa esibizione attirò verso di lui e la sua band i responsabili della Stiff Records, che produssero due album e una manciata di 45 giri dei Tenpole Tudor... prima che Eddi non sfasciasse il gruppo, dedicandosi a forme sonore meno caustiche come il cajun e il jazz.
I testi semplici, "da stadio", e il tappeto sonoro fittissimo, insieme al canto di Edward Tudor Pole (alias Eddie Tenpole) rendono questa band semplicemente mitica. Le loro esibizioni si godono maggiormente su supporto visivo, in quanto è veramente straordinario quello che Eddie riesce a fare sul palco. E i suoi "costumi"! Un autentico attore.
E non c'è da sorprendersi: quello dell'attore è anche il vero mestiere di questo rampollo della casa Tudor. Ogni tanto lo si vede in una parte secondaria - ma sempre indimenticabile - in qualche film anche di successo: Harry Potter e la camera dei segreti, GamesZ, Absolute Beginners, Tu chiamami Peter (sulla vita e la morte di Peter Sellers), Quills - La penna dello scandalo, Syd & Nancy (storia della fatale relazione tra Sid Vicious e Nancy Spungen), ecc. Si dice che abbia recitato anche in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, ma non è accertato. Fatto sta che il suo volersi gettare nella mischia del mondo dei suoni ha partorito questi Tenpole Tudor che rimangono un progetto molto godibile.
Per chi volesse tentare l'avventura dell'ascolto: tutte le compilation "post mortem" di questo gruppo sono consigliabilissime.
