Colonna sonora del secondo, bizzarro, incosistente e monotono film dei Beatles, "Help!" rappresenta una bella collezione di musica pop tipica della metà degli anni Sessanta. Com'era avvenuto per il brillante "A Hard Day's Night", i brani apparsi nel film erano posti sul primo lato dell'album, mentre il secondo era riservato ad altre canzoni.
In questo disco, pubblicato il 6 agosto del 1965, i Beatles cambiano i metodi di registrazione e fanno capolino i primi interessanti segni di sofistificazione. Nascono qui, tra i solchi di questa opera fondamentale i primi standard da storia della musica. Parecchi sono i titoli significativi: la lennoniana title track, un brano confessionale e autobiografico ricco di quell'inspiegabile ed eterna magia beatlesiana, la superba ed intensa "Ticket To Ride" e le due ballad memorabili "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", ispirata dalla poetica dylaniana e la trasognata e suonatissima "Yesterday", nella quale è presente un quartetto d'archi neoclassico. Interessanti, piacevoli e assolutamente riuscite sono le speculari "The Night Before" e "Another Girl", due easy rock intriganti firmati da Paul Mccartney, la fresca e corale "You're Going To Lose That Girl" e il folk precipitoso di "I've Just Seen A Face" che verrà in seguito ripreso nel repertorio concertistico dei Wings. George Harrison, in alcuni passaggi sostituito alla chitarra solista da Paul, contribuisce all'opera con due canzoni: "I Need You" e "You Like Me Too Much", entrambe ispirate dal rapporo con Patty Boyd. Nonostante l'ottimo e sorprendente uso del pedale del volume della chitarra nel primo brano, i suoi due sforzi compositivi non riescono a nascondere l'immaturità nei contenuti dei testi di Harrison del periodo.
S'arricchisce ulteriormente la serie di cover d'autore con la vecchia e cara "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" di Larry Williams e con "Act Naturally", un numero country'n'western affidato alla voce di Ringo, in origine portato al successo da Buck Owens. Rimangono da citare la delicata "It's Only Love", odiata e in seguito ripudiata da Lennon a causa del suo testo melenso ma resa comunque interessante dal vivace ritornello e dall'effetto leslie applicato alla chitarra di Harrison e la semplice "Tell Me What You See" con il suo arrangiamento particolarmente compresso. "Help!" è sostanzialmente un'opera di transizione, un ponte di passaggio dal sano, anfetaminico, spensierato vitalismo dei primi anni ai riferimenti più realistici e malinconici della vita di tutti i giorni. Anche la musica è più raffinata e si apre a nuove e variopinte influenze musicali e culturali. "Help!" è anche il primo album dei Beatles ad essere finalmente accettato dal pubblico adulto. Curiosa, infine, la storia di "Yesterday" la canzone che diverrà più celebre con gli anni e che all'epoca, in Inghilterra, non fu ritenuta meritevole neppure di un singolo. Secondo l'autore Paul Mccartney, la musica gli venne tutta in sogno e la mattina seguente la melodia era già pronta in testa.
Da questo momento in poi la storia artistica e umana dei Beatles entra in una nuova era. John Lennon e Paul Mccartney, le due menti musicali del gruppo, sono sempre più separati ma nonostante ciò riescono a creare una magico e fantastico equilibrio nel quale dolce sentimento, insofferenza e triste realtà convivono perfettamente in un notevole matrimonio artistico assolutamente inimitabile. Il grande sballo creativo è alle porte.
