Finalmente Sir Paul s’è fatto giustizia. Avrà finito di mangiarsi il fegato su quella che lui riteneva, probabilmente a ragione, una ingiustizia colossale: la manomissione da parte di Phil Spector dei nastri originali di “Let it be”, in particolare su “The Long And Winding Road”. In questo caso bisognerebbe però spaccare il discorso in due: da una parte il lato artistico, e in questo caso il disco ne ha sicuramente guadagnato (mai amati troppo nemmeno da parte mia i pesanti arrangiamenti di Spector su pezzi che invece erano estremamente leggeri e semplici), da un’ altra parte c’è un discorso di ennesima speculazione da parte del mondo discografico sui milioni di fans dei Beatles, che sicuramente non tarderanno a fare di questo disco un best-seller natalizio. C’era davvero bisogno di estorcere altri soldi ad un pubblico già saturo di pubblicazioni dei quattro di Liverpool? E se così fosse, non si poteva almeno inserire nel disco qualche chicca, viste le centinaia di ore di musica risalenti al periodo 1969-70 giacenti negli archivi di Abbey Road?
Veniamo alla descrizione del disco. “Get back” è la stessa versione uscita mel 1969 su singolo, che differisce da quella dell’album essendo più lunga e con una dissolvenza nel finale al posto delle battute di John Lennon. “Dig A Pony” comincia con Paul McCartney che canta il ritornello "all I want is you...”, e il pezzo non è quello dal concerto sul tetto, ma è registrato in studio, in versione più leggera. “For You Blue” di George Harrison è sostanzialmente uguale a quella dell’album ufficiale (tolti i chiacchiericci all’ inizio). Poi c’ è la pietra dello scandalo. Lascia un po’ spiazzati ascoltare un pezzo che per molti anni è stato “quello” in una versione così diversa, ma “The Long And Winding Road” con solo il piano di Paul e la batteria di Ringo è ancora più magica dell’originale. “Two Of Us”, che sull’ originale era posta all’ inizio del disco, qui è monca delle chiacchiere ed è leggermente più rallentata, bella comunque, solo chitarre acustiche. “I’ve Got A Feeling”, forse uno dei pezzi “minori” dei Beatles più apprezzati dai fans è anche qui una versione diversa, manca forse un po’ la grinta del concerto sul tetto, con John che risponde a Paul in alcune frasi. “One After 909” è lo stesso rock’ n’ roll del disco ufficiale con qualche parlato in più all’ inizio. “Don’ t Let Me Down” è in versione un pochino più "scura", anche se l’arrangiamento è più o meno lo stesso, visto che in origine questo pezzo non appariva nell’ album, ma era il lato B di “Get Back”. “I Me Mine” risentiva in origine delle pesantezze di Spector, ecco la versione “spogliata”. “Across The Universe” è bellissima come sempre anche in questa versione che appariva su un album benefit intitolato “No one gonna change our world”, per una organizzazione naturalista. Per chiudere “Let It Be” in versione singolo, meno elettrica e con un assolo di chitarra diverso (bravo George!)
Forse John Lennon non avrebbe apprezzato, visto che in più di un’occasione aveva espresso apprezzamenti per il lavoro di Phil Spector su un disco che lui aveva disprezzato, ma se fosse uscito realmente così probabilmente i Beatles avrebbero chiuso meglio la loro fantastica storia. (P.S.: le 3 stelle ovviamente sono per la subdola operazione commerciale che ne è scaturita).

Siamo dinnanzi all'ennesima operazione di marketing.
Sui Beatles, su quello che hanno rappresentato, sulla loro storia, dice molto di più Let It Be dressed, che naked.

Let it be resta un capolavoro, ma nella sua versione originale, sofferta e vestita.
Queste riesumazioni post mortem mi lasciano una sensazione di freddezza e speculazione, niente altro.

Sembra di ascoltare delle demo: sentite “The Long And Winding Road” prima e dopo la cura, poi capirete l’abisso che separa le due versioni.
In finale questo album suona poco più rock del vecchio ma non aggiunge niente di nuovo a quanto già sapevamo sui Beatles.
