"Rubber Soul" è un album fondamentale nella storia del rock, quello che segnerà una svolta non soltanto nella carriera dei Beatles, ma anche e soprattutto per la musica che verrà dopo. E pensare che invece è uno degli album più sottovalutati del quartetto britannico, che passa spesso inosservato, ancor più di "Abbey Road", l'ultimo capolavoro dei Fab Four, nonché loro testamento musicale.
Ma perché "Rubber Soul" è così importante? Innanzi tutto segna la prima vera maturazione artistica di Lennon & McCartney a partire dal '63, ovvero dal primo album del gruppo, l'acerbo e, pardon, scontato "Please, Please Me". E, secondo motivo, perché è proprio con questo disco che Lennon & McCartney abbandonano definitivamente gli schemi consueti della pop song da loro stessi stabiliti, ponendo tra l'altro fine all'epoca del Mersey Beat.
Anche il titolo è significativo: "Rubber Soul", letteralmente "anima di gomma". E la musica di "Rubber Soul" dà proprio quest'impressione: di essere malleabile, colorata, di gomma. L'utilizzo massiccio di droghe, una maggiore libertà di sperimentare in studio rispetto al passato, portano i quattro a scoprire una nuova realtà e lidi ancora inesplorati, producendo improvvisamente segnali musicali distorti, strani.
"Cominciavamo a sentire suoni che prima non sentivamo" ammise in seguito McCartney. Dello stesso parere è Lennon: "Stavamo migliorando sia tecnicamente che musicalmente. All'inizio dovevamo prendere quello che veniva, dovevamo finire in due ore, e una o tre registrazioni erano sufficienti, ma non sapevamo come far sentire i bassi. Poi, con "Rubber Soul", diventammo moderni."
E così ecco passare dalle atmosfere esotiche di "Norwegian Wood" alla dolce ballata acustica "Michelle"; dalla lenta e sofferta "Girl" al rock di "Drive My Car"e "Run For Your Life", passando poi per una insolita "The Word" dai richiami molto jazzistici o per le ambiziose e complesse armonie di "Nowhere Man", "Wait" e "If I Nedeed Someone", per lo sdolcinato pop di "You Won't See Me" e di "I'm Looking Through You", per le chitarre distorte di "Think For Yourself", per il soul di "What Goes On" o ancora per la ballata pianistica "In My Life".
Tutte canzoni, d'amore e non, che mostrano una maturità e una profondità nuove, con strutture armoniche e melodiche più complete e complesse, e meno dirette rispetto a quelle dei cinque album precedenti.
"Eravamo arrivati a un punto in cui pensavamo: 'Adesso possiamo estendere il nostro repertorio a canzoni un po' più surreali, un po' più divertenti'"disse McCartney.
L'album venne pubblicato il 3 dicembre 1965, in concomitanza con il singolo "Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out", e in una settimana schizzò al primo posto sia nelle classifiche britanniche sia in quelle statunitensi. "Rubber Soul" è quindi un album gioioso, curato nei minimi dettagli, perfetto, che inaugura nuove tecniche di registrazione e che segna il passaggio dal beat a nuove sonorità psichedeliche: la fine di un epoca e l'inizio di un'altra.

Rubber Soul stupisce per l’avidità con cui incalza l’ascoltatore, inchiodandolo allo stereo, lasciandolo senza fiato fin dal primo ascolto.
I testi di Lennon: superbo in 'In My Life' (assoluta poesia), sonnambulo in 'Nowhere Man', profeta in 'The Word', cannabiolico in 'Girl'.

I Beatles furono quattro musicisti mediocri che cantavano ancora canzoni melodiche di tre minuti.
'Rubber Soul' è sicuramente uno dei migliori album dei Beatles, ma la vera musica è da ricercare in altre band.
