Attesi alla seconda prova dopo il confortante debutto omonimo, i quattro giovanissimi musicisti di Leeds confermano quanto fatto all'esordio. Psichedelia+rock duro+ballate ridotte al minimo= The Music. Sì, proprio così, questi sono gli ingredienti di una delle band più interessanti uscite dal panorama musicale britannico degli ultimi anni. Con un cantante tanto inguardabile quanto bravo (e vi assicuro che è veramente inguardabile...) la band, in questo album, strizza l'occhio a diverse band, come Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Verve di "A Storm In Heaven" e Jane's Addiction (confrontare la voce stupenda di Robert Harvey con quella di Perry Farrell per credere...).
Il singolo apripista, "Freedom Fighters", convince al primo ascolto, con un delizioso gioco rullante/hi-hat all'inizio (che poi si ritrova in tutto il brano) che ci introduce ad un rock piuttosto duro, psichedelico e coinvolgente. Un bell'assolo molto "effettato" dà quel tocco di classe e tecnica in più ad un brano che altrimenti sarebbe stato sicuramente sotto la media del disco.
In "Bleed From Within" le chitarre sono dure, acide, distorte, la voce splendida e in gran forma come sempre, il basso poco virtuoso ma importantissimo per la struttura del brano. Tutto questo è completato dall'inserimento di alcuni strumenti tipicamente "Afro" come percussioni e bonghi (che si ritrovano anche nel resto del disco) e che danno quel tocco di allegria in più ad un album dai toni molto meno cupi rispetto al predecessore. "Breakin" è forse il miglior episodio e racchiude in sè tutta l'essenza dei The Music. Quattro minuti di puro rock stile Jane's Addiction/Led Zeppelin che non aggiunge nulla allo stile del quartetto britannico, ma conferma che alla giovanissima età di 20 anni si possono realizzare dischi tecnici (ma nemmeno troppo) senza stancare l'ascoltatore.
"Fight The Feeling" è l'unico brano che spezza un po' il ritmo dell'intero disco. Ballata molto semplice, passaggi di batteria ridotti al minimo, delicatissimo e leggerissimo arpeggio di chitarra in sottofondo ci mostrano i The Music in una versione piuttosto cupa, in pieno stile debut-album, come anche i "Into The Night", dove l'intimismo della band affiora al top. Tracce di pop-rock stile Verve in "Guide", con un ritmo quasi sempre uguale e di facile ascolto.
"Cessation" e "I Need Love" hanno ritmi, come "Freedom Fighters", piuttosto "danzerecci", la cui forza è sicuramente l'esibizione live. La band ha infatti una resa decisamente ottima dal vivo, sia per quanto riguarda la parte strumentale (decisamente di alto livello) che nella parte vocale (altrettanto eccezionale). Queste due caratteristiche si possono ritrovare comunque anche nelle registrazioni in studio, nelle quali la band sembra avere lo stesso identico smalto delle performances live.
Una delle ennesime (ma migliori) band col "The" non realizza, come ormai sembra prassi, un disco di banale rock'n'roll-clone, ma sforna un album maturo, al di sopra della media dei dischi prodotti negli ultimi periodi, dal sound forse meno psichedelico del primo ma più solare (nella musica, ma non nei testi). Inferiore ma forse più completo del primo lavoro, un disco che ci fa capire come anche a 20 anni si possano sfornare album decisamente maturi, completi e senza particolari falle o punti deboli.
