Il 9/11 e il 7/7, Youtube e MySpace, l'ascesa dei Coldplay e quella degli Arctic Monkeys, l'entrata in scena di George W. Bush e la fine di Tony Blair, la scomparsa del Britpop e l'avvento dell'Hip-Hop, gli mp3 e il digitale, Itunes e la fine del disco inteso come tale, "American Idol" e inutilità varie: negli ultimi undici anni di assenza dei Verve dalle scene è successo tutto questo e molto altro ed è impossibile non tenerne conto dopo aver saputo del loro incredibile ritorno.
Esce così il disco del ritorno, "Forth", un prodotto che, innanzitutto, parte con un gioco di parole come titolo:"Forth" di primo acchitto fa pensare a "Fourth" (ovvero quarto lavoro in studio per la band), e invece sta per "Forth" (e cioè "avanti"), quasi a un monito lanciato fin dalla copertina da Richard Aschroft e soci. Oltre un decennio dopo il capolavoro "Urban Hymns" (uscito il 29 Settembre 1997 e capace di vendere 500mila copie solo in Italia), il successo inaspettato di canzoni come "Bittersweet Symphony", "The Drugs Don't Work" e lo scioglimento nell'aprile del 1999 ecco i quattro di nuovo in scena con un disco di cui si sono concentrati a fondo giudizi ed opinioni da parte di pubblico e critici. Formazione tipo schierata, quella che si formò a Wigan nel 1989, con Aschroft alla voce, Nick McCabe alla chitarra, Simon Jones al basso, e Peter Salisbury alla batteria, e dieci canzoni per un album lunghissimo (65 minuti) che sorprende da subito per lo stato di grazia della band e delle corde vocali di Aschroft che praticamente fa quello che vuole, si fa Marvin Gaye e Liam Gallagher, sale verso il falsetto e scende nel baritonale.
Apertura epica con "Sit And Wonder", più che una canzone una dichiarazione d'intenti, un pezzo sontuoso sospeso su un tappeto di chitarre e percussioni con Aschroft che continua a ripetere "Sit And Wonder" ad ogni inizio strofa prima di entrare nel ritornello che tiene cupo e basso il pezzo come se dietro le corde vocali del cantante ci fossero i Massive Attack piuttosto che i Verve, mentre in coda del brano parte un assolo in cui McCabe suona come il fratello di David Gilmour. Poi entra il singolo, "Love Is Noise" , già un classico della band, accattivante e contagioso con un ritornello che rimane appiccicato addosso e sostenuto da una produzione quasi tridimensionale, con un loop ossessivo che lo rende un pezzo da rave pop. "Rather Be" parte con un pianoforte maestoso prima che si sommino gli altri strumenti anche se il centro focale del brano rimane la voce di Aschroft così come nel successivo "Judas", forse il capolavoro del disco: sei minuti di soul che sembrano fabbricati a Manchester, come se Marvin Gaye fosse nato bianco e operaio negli anni 80 della Thatcher. "I See Houses" che suona come una "Lucky Man" versione 2.0, piano ed elettronica su due diversi binari che convergono poi in un ritornello decisamente "Verviano".
Il disco si snoda tra elettronica claustrofobica spostata a chitarre twang ("Numbness"), beat su cui Aschroft praticamente fa spoken word ("Noise Epic", 8 minuti e 17) e ballate country decisamente atipiche ("Appalachian Springs"), per andare a completare un'opera lunghissima e complessa che si prende il proprio tempo e in cui si sente una band in forma strepitosa che ha fatto tutto come voleva e ha aspettato il momento giusto per farlo, legandosi al vero protagonista di "Forth", Richard Aschroft, che dopo la grande paura dell'anomalia trovatagli nei polmoni e la conseguente decisione di smettere di fumare (erano due pacchetti al giorno) si è guardato indietro, ha chiamato indietro i vecchi amici e ha capito che era un peccato buttare via un passato tanto glorioso. Per farlo ha costruito un luminoso presente partendo da un album che nelle classifiche di merito di fine anno finirà sicuramente davanti all'opera dei Coldplay.

'Forth', che vuol dire avanti. Bisogna guardare avanti, sviluppando ciò che di buono si era fatto ieri e dimenticando il pessimo.

Le reunion si sa spesso sono bizzarre e azzardate trovate commerciali o disperati tentativi di rinvigorire la propria carriera.
È lecito dire che questo "Forth" è un album un pò troppo omogeneo con troppi pochi momenti epici da sottolineare per essere un album di quei The Verve che tutti conoscono... anzi conoscevano.
