Le reunion si sa spesso sono bizzarre e azzardate trovate commerciali o disperati tentativi di rinvigorire la propria carriera... beh è proprio il caso di Richard Ashcroft e dei suoi riformati The Verve.
La band inglese scioltasi dopo i gloriosi fasti degli anni '90 con album del calibro di "Urban Hymns" e singoli entrati di diritto nell'olimpo della musica come Bittersweet Simphony hanno deciso di riprovare a cavalcare l'onda con questo nuovo lavoro "Forth". Il risultato non è dei migliori ad essere sinceri, appena sufficiente e troppo al di sotto delle aspettative.
Apripista del disco è il pezzo Sit and Wonder sicuramente il miglior brano dove è forte la reminescenza dei primi Verve, pezzo forte, energico che riporta alla mente la devastante Rolling People. Cambiando traccia si passa al primo singolo estratto Love Is Noise che a livello di produzione radiofonica sta facendo un vero e proprio boom, ma obiettivamente si ci aspettava qualcosa di più, pezzo per l'appunto radiofonico da easy-listening e poi accompagnato da irritanti e ripetuti all'infinito campionamenti dal suono scimmiesco: non ci siamo. Si arriva a Rather Be, brano fortemente influenzato dalla vena dell'Ashcroft periodo solista, canzone dell'anima e della mente proprio come piace a Sir Richie. Successivamente si affilano tre brani come Judas, Numbness e I See Houses che fanno sprofondare un album iniziato discretamente nell'anonimato più scuro... melanconie uniche eccessivamente lunghe nel minutaggio, qualcuno deve insegnare ad Ashcroft che ciò che conta in una song è la qualità e non la quantità...
Il tutto si riprende leggermente con la psichedelica e frastornante Noise Epic e con l'ottima Valium Skies che ci riporta col pensiero ai tempi in cui Sonnet e The Drugs Don't Work allietavano le nostre giornate nel lontano '96. L'album si chiude con Columbo (forte anche qui la vena solista di Ashcroft) e l'impegnativa e solenne Appalachian Springs forse vera gemma dell'album per i veri intenditori.
Concludendo è lecito dire che questo "Forth" è un album un pò troppo omogeneo con troppi pochi momenti epici da sottolineare per essere un album di quei The Verve che tutti conoscono... anzi conoscevano.
