Salve a tutti, non ho mai recensito prima e dato che ho notato la mancanza di una recensione accurata su questo bellissimo album, ho deciso di cimentarmi in quest'impresa. Innanzitutto il titolo "Forth" e la copertina ci preannunciano un disco celestiale, come per dire "avanti! su nel cielo".
Si parte subito con la bellisima "Sit And Wonder" uscita da 23 minuti di jam session della band, una canzona che si è evoluta a partire dalle prime esibizioni del reunion tour fino ad arrivare a questa bellisima versione in studio dove Nick McCabe (chitarrista) si diverte, quasi, a giocare con la sua chitarra aggiungendo effetti quà e là accompagnato dal violinista Davide Rossi (orgoglio italiano), su una base frastornante (quasi funk) di basso e batteria (Simon Jones-Peter Salisbury) con Ashcroft che che entra in testa e non se ne và più implorando Dio di dargli la luce "Lord gimme some light....". Subito dopo arrivano due pezzi pop come solo Richard sà scrivere: "Love Is Noise" e "Rather Be". Due canzoni che faranno contenti i fan di "Urban Hymns" data l'ostinata attitudine pop: la prima è rovinato dal loop (quasi ridicolo) 'aooohhh' anche se ha un testo stupendo e la seconda è il solito singolo di classe alla Richard Ashcroft solista (sarà il secondo singolo dal 17 Novembre). Segue "Judas" un pezzo soul in cui la chitarra scampanellante ricorda ai vecchi fans la sognante "A Man Called Sun".
"Numbness" è il tributo dei Verve ai Pink Floyd in cui il primo verso è uguale a quello di "Breath In The Air" (mi pare), in cui spicca una chitarra graffiante e con un assolo stupendo. La seconda metà del disco si apre con "I See Houses" un pezzo molto "verviano" e oscuro che ci fa immaginare orizzonti lontani. Subito dopo "Noise Epic" un cavalcata appunto epica, tra l'altro il primo pezzo para-prog dei Verve, che si divide in 3 parti guidate dal parlato di Richard e da una parte strumentale molto rock (tipo Stooges) e quasi hardcore nel finale. Dopo questo rock impetuoso ci si prende una pausa con "Valium Skies" un pezzo dream pop che ci rilassa quasi come una droga. Si riprende con "Columbo" in cui padroneggia uno stupendo basso di Simon che ci guida per tutta la canzone adornata dagli stupendi effetti di McCabe. In conclusione, la ballata a metà tra rock psichedelico e country: "Appalachian Springs" che suona come "See you in the next one" del primo lavoro come un tranquillo finale in dissolvenza di un album di rock'n'roll.
Tirando le somme possiamo dire che quest'album, un ibrido tra i loro precedenti lavori, sembri essere il più maturo bilanciandosi tra la vena compositiva di Richard e le indimenticabili jam session della band.

Ashcroft e soci riprendono in pugno la situazione. Svoltano, eccome se svoltano.
'Forth', che vuol dire avanti. Bisogna guardare avanti, sviluppando ciò che di buono si era fatto ieri e dimenticando il pessimo.

Le reunion si sa spesso sono bizzarre e azzardate trovate commerciali o disperati tentativi di rinvigorire la propria carriera.
È lecito dire che questo "Forth" è un album un pò troppo omogeneo con troppi pochi momenti epici da sottolineare per essere un album di quei The Verve che tutti conoscono... anzi conoscevano.
