E, finalmente, quattro.
Undici anni, tanti, troppi. A molti sono mancati, molti detrattori malediranno il loro ritorno. Certo, il vecchio Richard non ci ha mai abbandonati; "Uuuh uh/Let's break the night with coloooour...", sbraitava con successo ritrovato nelle radio un paio di annetti fa, ma nessuno si sarebbe aspettato la resurrezione della sua creatura più amata, desiderata.
Solo Simon Tong non è della partita, preso com'è da "buoni, cattivi e regine" con l'ex-britpopper di lusso Damon Albarn. Gli altri ci sono tutti, altroché. E chi se lo perde il grande ritorno. "Love is noise/love is pain/love is these blues that I'm singing again", canta Ashcroft sul tappeto danzereccio del primo estratto da "Forth", "Love Is Noise" ("sarà una fottuta numero uno"; parola del signor Noel Gallagher, uno che di numeri uno continua a sfornarne a tonnellate).
Anche se l'apertura è da svenimento istantaneo, con quella "Sit And Wonder" già sentita nei live; circa sette minuti in cui la banda-Ashcroft si sbizzarrisce ad omaggiare la meno conosciuta produzione pre-masterpiece (leggasi alla voce "Urban Hymns") con un pezzone che poche bands possono permettersi in apertura dei giochi. Come a dire, "we're back!", ma non aspettatevi only pop songs. Non che quest'ultime manchino, eh, sennò che gusto c'è. "Rather Be" (perfetto innesto tra il lato pop di "Sonnet" e la ashcroftiana "Check The Meaning"), "I See Houses", "Judas" e la bellissima chiusura "Appalachian Springs" languono ed incantano che è una meraviglia. Quando i ritmi si rialzano, ne viene fuori una "Noise Epic" per la quale Tom Meighan dei Kasabian arriverebbe ad uccidere. Strofa parlata, repentini cambi di ritmo, basso serrato e drumming perfetto (in tal senso, il lavoro del redivivo Peter Salisbury è ammirevole) ne fanno la top track indiscussa di questo "Forth", che serve da linea-guida pure per la successiva "Columbo". E non sorprendetevi se l'incantevole "Valium Skies" potrebbe essere la nuova "Lucky Man"; in questo disco il Richard songwriter sembra ringiovanito di dieci anni, ed ha pure acquistato una maggior profondità espressiva nella voce che rende i pezzi ancor più fascinosi e compiuti.
Bene tutta la band (un chitarrista come McCabe è ovviamente fondamentale), che segue il leader in tutto e per tutto, sotterrando l'ascia di guerra e ritrovando pure un'ottima intesa. Nonostante il prossimo disco previsto sia il quarto solista di Ashcroft, i ragazzi hanno deciso di andare avanti, e non può che far piacere, visti i risultati.
Il primo dei tanti "grandi ritorni" di quest'ultimo scorcio di 2008, quindi, va in porto alla grande.
Speriamo sia di buon auspicio.

Ashcroft e soci riprendono in pugno la situazione. Svoltano, eccome se svoltano.
'Forth', che vuol dire avanti. Bisogna guardare avanti, sviluppando ciò che di buono si era fatto ieri e dimenticando il pessimo.

Le reunion si sa spesso sono bizzarre e azzardate trovate commerciali o disperati tentativi di rinvigorire la propria carriera.
È lecito dire che questo "Forth" è un album un pò troppo omogeneo con troppi pochi momenti epici da sottolineare per essere un album di quei The Verve che tutti conoscono... anzi conoscevano.
