Ecco il ritorno ufficiale dei Whitesnake in un nuovo studio-album dopo "Restless Heart" (1997), e dopo il live "In still of the night" del 2007 con un David Coverdale in gran forma, e con una voce strabiliante.
Questo "GOOD TO BE BAD", ha tutte le carte in regola per diventare un classico del genere.
Un album che non risparmia le orecchie da un grande e raffinato Rock/Hard Rock di gran classe, come negli anni in cui Coverdale ci ha regalato, da "Ready an' Willing" (1980) "Come an' Get It" (1981) "Saint And Sinners" (1982) "Slide It In" (1984) a "Whitesnake" (1987) ma anche soprattutto "Coverdale Page" (1993).
Al cospetto del "Re David" abbiamo Doug Aldrich, chitarrista tra gli altri di Ronnie James Dio e degli House of Lords (ai tempi di "Sahara"); Reb Beach chitarrista dei Winger, collabora con Alice Cooper e Dokken; Timothy Drury qui tastierista ma fu anche chitarrista e cantante, ha collaborato con Brian Adams, Eagles e Stivie Nicks; Uriah Duffy bassista R&B , Rock e Metal; Chris Frazier, famoso per essere stato batterista per un decennio circa di Steve Vai.
Il cd inizia con "Best Years" un opener più che azzeccata, con chitarre pesanti, che fa capire che il sound è moderno, dato da Doug ma che il marchio David Coverdale's Whitesnake non si molla mai. La chitarra inconfondibile di Doug si sente e il pezzo poteva uscire tranquillamente da "into the Light" o "Coverdale Page" pezzo coinvolgente, e non fai tempo a tirar fiato che ecco subito dopo "Can You Hear the Wind Blow" e la chitarra di Aldrich è qui un riff pesante e quasi ipnotico (un Ronnie Dio questa canzone poteva tranquillamente interpretarla), a mio avviso grande pezzo hard. "Call On Me" altro riferimento specialmente vocale a "Coverdale Page", fino a qui la qualità del cd è eccezionale, non delude, la musica "picchia" e la voce è più che ottima. "All I Want All I Need", ecco la prima ballad, qui i riferimenti a 1987 ci sono tutti, un bel mid tempo. La title track ci fa ritornare a un grande hard rock, e il chitarrista da un sound fresco al cd, rispettando sempre lo stile che ha fatto grandi i Whitesnake e Coverdale.
"All For Love" è la sesta canzone, omaggio dei tempi di "Saint and Sinner" o "Slide It In". Ora si sogna a occhi aperti con la Country/Blues ballad "Summer Rain". Qui invece si sente di nuovo che il Plant sul Coverdale ha avuto una gran influenza: la grande "Lay Down Your Love" è la nuova "Still Of The Night". Un sofferto Blues/Rock per "A Fool in Love" (vagamente "River Song"), grandissima interpretazione. Grande Hard/Rock'n Roll invece per "Got What You Need"...e la conclusiva "Til The End Of Time": una bellissima ballata Country/Rock che sembra scritta apposta per un moderno film western.
Il Sound, come detto è fresco e moderno, anche se effettivamente non s'è "inventato" nulla di nuovo, ma sicuramente si è davanti a un SIGNOR CD, che tutti gli amanti del Serpente Bianco dovrebbero avere, e anche per quelli che vogliono passare un'ora all'ascolto di un gran cd Hard Rock, con vaghe venature settantiane, ben prodotto e ottimamente interpretato.
