Gradualmente dal 1996 con i due "Keys To Ascension" e "The Ladder" gli Yes sembrano voler riabituare il pubblico alle loro atmosfere classicstyle tanto apprezzate. E ci stanno riuscendo, lasciando da parte ogni eventuale velleità verso il singolo di successo radiofonico di grande diffusione. La formazione si è riappropriata da tempo di Steve Howe, il menestrello ufficiale, e per poco tempo sui Keys..., sigh, di Rick Wakeman. L'indimenticato e quasi insostituibile tastierista.
Ecco che nel 2001 esce questo "Magnification", realizzato con massicci arrangiamenti orchestrali. E' anche il risultato di un sondaggio con i fans se effettivamente era il caso di produrre un'opera totale con sonorità classiche. Una specie di concept album con tematiche tipicamente Andersoniane, un pò cosmiche e spirituali. Quale più ghiotta occasione per questa formazione, in un momento di grazia creativa. Il Tour che seguirà sarà semplicemente splendido facendo assaporare dal vivo alcuni loro capolavori appunto con l'orchestra al seguito. E'forse l'unico gruppo che riesce a proporre con la stessa qualità un repertorio che va dal prog-rock colto e primordiale all'hard rock anni 80-90. Unici.
Sull'album non ci sono cover del passato, tutti brani nuovi.
Apre la bella "Magnification" dalle tonalità positive e dalla partitura, come sempre, piuttosto complessa. C'è un pò di tutto dentro, stilisticamente parlando. Ritornello con cori inconfodibili. Si lascia ascoltare e lancia molto bene quello che verrà dopo.
"Spirit of Survival" sembra un po' confusa con un ritmo rock piuttosto cadenzato. C'è qualche staccone. Un po' sigla da giallo. Poco coinvolgente e seriosa.
"Don'to Go" è la tipica canzoncina Yes orecchiabile che fa da anticamera a "Give Love Each Day".
Eccoci finalmente agli Yes che riportano la mente a "Close To The Edge". Un intro meraviglioso da soundtrack pieno di archi, una bella melodia con belle aperture e cambi con qualche inserto alla "City Of Love". I più esigenti sono abbastanza accontentati.
"Can You Imagine" è stato il singolo del CD. Canta Chris Squire, sembra un brano tolto alle fortune di "Drama". Molto breve e anche un po' innovativo. Anderson è "relegato" a corista. Alan White picchia a dovere. Howe non c'è proprio sostituito dall'orchestra. Molto bello e trascinante. Ascoltate in cuffia le parti di coro, curatissime. Salubre prog-rock al 100%.
"We Agree", è la parente povera di "Give Love.." con in più un breve intro di chitarra classica e oboe. Cose già sentite dall'archivio Yes. Carina ma niente di più.
Segue "Soft as a Dove". Ottima ninnananna dopo il Carosello, ma attenzione, dal sapore medievale e fiabesco. Siamo alla corte di Sir Steve Howe. Riporta a "Madrigal" di "Tormato".
"Dreamtime" è il risultato di 34 anni di carriera Yes nel frullatore. Un riassunto di 10 min. di tutti o quasi gli stili proposti dal gruppo. Interessante. Dal min. "4.00" al "5.00" c'è persino della ricerca. Antologica e confusionaria. Per palati, come sempre, un pò fini.
"In the presence Of" riporta facilmente al romanticismo coinvolgente di "And You And I".
Si deve ascoltare seduti e attenti. Evoca di tutto, molto bella ed emozionante. Forse il brano migliore. Sono 12 minuti spesi bene.
La disimpegnata "Time Is Time" fa a sigla finale al bel film "Magnification".
Una produzione Yes eccellente da quattro stelle che dà una pedata al periodo 90125-Talk, ma rilancia la carriera da dove, molti speravano ripartisse.
Ulteriore dimostrazione che la loro musica è perfettamente abbinabile alla classica. Un esempio di altissima professionalità senza passar per auto-celebrativi. Quattro stelle meritate. Cosa avranno ancora nel loro infinito cassetto?
