La trilogia collaborativa di Trevor Rabin con gli Yes si chiude nel 1994 con questo interessante lavoro "Talk". Preceduto da 90125 e Big Generator. Una decade di svolta stilistica che ha sfibrato le file di estimatori del periodo classico, creando un nuovo seguito di ascoltatori più inclini alla modernità. A livello di remunerazione, popolarità, rilancio e vendite è il periodo migliore per i Senatori del rock progressive, tanto che, opportunamente, la casa discografica subito dopo l'avvento del cd si prodiga a ristampe di ogni sorta con le dovute rimasterizzazioni. Paradossalmente il cambio di stile, porta ad una curiosità sui lavori antecedenti. Come dire.."se hanno fatto questo oggi, chissà quelli prima!"
"Talk", come dai credits, è una produzione Rabin. Gli Yes di quel periodo sono molto dipendenti da lui, tanto che dichiara la pigrizia effettiva del gruppo e la difficoltà di portarli in studio. Le musiche sono tutte sue e anche lo studio di registrazione Jacaranda Room di Los Angeles, i testi di Anderson.
La musica è "progressive stars and stripes", in chiave Yes. Tecnicamente è ineccepibile. Sonorità con tecnologia a badilate. Talmente perfetto che non sembra suonato da strumenti reali. La batteria di White è potentissima, a volte feroce e persino troppo curata e filtrata nella timbrica. Chitarre taglienti, la solita voce di Anderson sotto formalina, il basso di Squire udibile in note con dinamiche bassissime, quasi spostamenti d'aria. Tony Kaye è presente solo con l'Hammond, godibile su "The Calling". Un tributo a se stesso per il poco spazio a disposizione.Trevor Rabin è in veste di arrangiatore e polistrumentista da 10 e lode, alla Geddy Lee dei Rush. Impone un certo stile e tendenza al lavoro, ma lascia sbavagliati gli Yes. Un bel disco da non paragonare a "Close to the Edge" o "Relayer". Anche la grafica della cover viene privata dai portentosi lavori aerografici di Roger Dean. Una scritta Yes essenziale della new entry Peter Max. I nomi dei musicisti scritti nel retro mettono in guardia il consumatore: "Siamo gli Yes, ma questi. Sei avvisato". Ma la musica?
Si apre il tutto con "The Calling". Apre bene la scaletta. Musica corale a ariosa, tonalità positive e potenti. Stacchi a ripetizione paurosi da far sbavare gli appassionati del genere...Cori come solo loro sanno fare. Voce di Squire molto presente con quel mezzo tono in più.
"I Am Waiting" è un inno dalla semplice intonazione e melodia. Forse troppo lunga.
"Real Love" è scritta anche da Squire. Richiama City of Love. Forse la più vicina al passato.
"State of Play" è il gioiellino. Molto energica. Gran bel pezzo. Chitarra hi-tech tagliente.
"Walls" è stata il singolo di lancio. Si scomoda per la partitura Roger Hodgson, la voce dei Supertramp di Logical Song per esempio. Il perchè di questa collaborazione lo sanno loro. Il risultato è una ballata da birra e salsiccia. Estivo.
"Where Will You Be" è introspettivo, con un arrangiamento ritmico da colonna sonora. C'è un delizioso assolino di chitarra quasi alla fine. Una ninna nanna troppo lunga e dispersiva.
"Endless Dream" è una suite di 14 minuti complessivi. Vale tutto il cd.
Si comincia con la strumentale "Silent Spring". Splendida nell'esecuzione. Potente e inquietante, strapiena di suoni. Interessante l'intro con il loop di pianoforte. C'è molta innovazione. Tutto in 2 minuti. Obbligatoria la cuffia.Un pò Rush.
Segue la lunga "Talk". Una passeggiata a braccetto di Trevor Rabin che ha spazio a tutto tondo per la sperimentazione creando parentesi sonore cosmiche, stacchi e reprise. E usa gli Yes per farlo!! Il pezzo finisce con bel coro più un assolo strappalacrime, è il saluto di Rabin ai fan. Un addio.
"Endless Dream" fa da titoli di coda.
Gli Yes con quest'album sono stati premiati negli USA per l'innovazione. Non è uno dei capolavori della loro lunghissima carriera, eccellente come sempre il lato prettamente tecnico. Per i cultori dell'old style è un mezzo passo falso. Resta comunque tutto ad alti livelli, meno di così non sanno fare e non è poco. Da questa formazione è facile avere alte aspettative.
