Questa recensione ha due ragioni di esistere, la prima è rendere omaggio al grande R. J. Dio che ci ha lasciato in questo 2010, la seconda per rendere giustizia ad un album, troppo spesso sottovalutato o addirittura sciaguratamente considerato, da molti, uno dei peggiori album dei Black Sabbath, come se dischi quali "Technical Ecstasy", "Never Say Die" del periodo Ozzy o "Forbidden" del periodo Martin non fossero mai usciti.
"Dehumanizer" è un disco figlio del suo tempo che però a mio modesto parere è l'unico post Ozzy a contenere alcune peculiarità che fecero dei primi Sabbath degli anni settanta, un gruppo in grado di influenzare in modo netto e tangibile il futuro heavy metal.
Uscito nel 1992, "Dehumanizer" è paradossalmente più granitico, heavy e malvagio di molte uscite dell'epoca da parte di grossi nomi dello starsystem metallico, dai Maiden di "Fear of the dark", ai Metallica che si godevano il successo planetario del Black album, tanto per citare due grossi nomi.
Un canzone dall'incedere doom e fumoso come "After All (The Dead)", non si sentiva dai primi anni settanta e con un po'di fantasia, sostituendo la voce di Dio con quella di Ozzy, il gioco è fatto.
Ronnie J. Dio è la grande novità di questo album. Dopo aver prestato la la sua ugola nei due meravigliosi dischi dei primi anni ottanta che ebbero il pregio di far entrare i Black Sabbath in un nuovo decennio a gareggiare con la nascente NWOBHM, i rapporti tra il folletto di Portsmouth e Iommi non furono dei più amichevoli, complice una miriade di clausole legali ma soprattutto i famosi ritocchi apportati a "Live Evil", mai digeriti da Dio che ne decretarono la separazione.
La formazione che registra "Dehumanizer" nei Rockfield Studios nel sud del Galles, sotto la produzione di Mack(già produttore dei Queen) è la stessa di "Mob Rules" che vedeva oltre a Dio e Iommi, Geezer Butler al basso e Vinny Appice alla batteria, formazione che diciassette anni dopo darà vita agli Heaven & Hell di "The Devil You Know", tanto per ribadire la bontà di questa formazione, sicuramente la migliore mai avuta dai Sabbath dopo l'originale e storica line-up.
Se all'epoca, la reunion della formazione con Dio, sembrava una bella mossa commerciale per rialzare le quotazioni di due carriere, quella solista di Dio, dopo il poco ispirato "Lock Up The Wolves" e quella dei Sabbath reduci dall'epicità di un disco come "Tyr" ( che comunque conteneva anche lui i suoi gioielli), con gli anni la bontà di questo disco sembra accrescere. Canzoni ben impiantate nel presente di allora, con Dio che lascia i suoi testi fantasy a favore di liriche proiettate alla vita di tutti i giorni e nell'incerto futuro con tutte le sue insidie umane e tecnologiche.
I suoni riabbracciano la solenne lentezza del passato, perdendo il calore del blues ma acquistando la freddezza di riff metallici e quasi thrash.
L'apertura affidata a "Computer God" è un monito contro la nuova generazione cresciuta con i computer ma ancora lontana dall'ingabbiamento totale di internet e dei social network ma certamente profetica. Canzone che parte lenta e sontuosa per accellerare nel finale con Iommi a dimostrare l'assoluta leadership di re dei riff. La componente doom è presente oltre che nella già citata "After All (The Dead)" anche nella straziante e pesantissima "Letters From Earth", e nella bella e sontuosa Sins of the father. Il basso caratteristico di Butler apre invece la cadenzata "Master Of Insanity" che sfocerà nell'epicità del chorus guidato da un Dio in ritrovata forma.
Discorso diverso per "Tv Crimes", la canzone più veloce del disco e ancora con Dio sugli scudi per l'ottima interpretazione che mette alla berlina i famosi telepredicatori, in quegli anni sulla cresta dell'onda nelle reti televisive americane e nemici numeri uno della musica metal e per la groovy e malvagia "I", ancora con Dio protagonista in un crescendo di teatralità vocale.
"Too Late" è una semi -ballad che parte acustica fino crescere sfociando nell‘assolo di Iommi, in verità sempre molto ispirato durante tutta la durata del disco, spargendo buoni assoli in tutte le canzoni, la finale "Buried Alive" e la più famosa del lotto, "Time Machine", che verrà usata anche nella colonna sonora di Fusi di testa sfiorano il tipico rifferrama del thrash metal.
Purtroppo il sodalizio di questa formazione durò lo spazio di questo disco, con il relativo tour che toccò anche l'Italia nel 1992 in un Monsters of rock a Reggio Emilia, insieme a Iron Maiden, Testament, Megadeth e Pantera, poi i soliti litigi si impossessarono della scena e il resto è storia...
Il disco passerà nel dimenticatoio e ricordato solo per la pessima copertina che rivaleggia con quella di "Forbidden", per venire in seguito rivalutato dagli stessi Heaven & Hell che da esso hanno ripescato alcune canzoni come "I", "After All" e "Computer God" durante i live.
