Un tour insieme per rialzare le rispettive quotazioni. Da qualche tempo infatti Bob Dylan, mostro sacro della musica internazionale, combatteva contro il suo stesso personaggio, del quale era diventato prigioniero. Dopo i successi elettrici di "Bringing It All Back Home", "Highway 61 Revisited" e "Blonde On Blonde", ed in seguito all'ormai celebre incidente motociclistico, Dylan si ritirava a vita privata, realizzando dischi che in qualche modo esulassero dal suo mito: "John Wesley Harding" segnava un ritorno a certe sonorità acustiche, mentre coi successivi "Nashville Skyline" e "New Morning" (soprassedendo sugli scempi di "Self Portrait" e "Dylan") era il country a far capolino nella musica di Zimmerman. Dischi più che buoni, ma che certo poco avevano a che spartire col Dylan venerato da stuoli di fan: di fatto i consensi in questa sua nuova veste erano certamente più tiepidi rispetto al passato, e del poeta che aveva ammaliato le platee rimaneva poco o niente.
The Band seguiva invece un percorso più lineare, per quanto dopo i primi album la creatività cominciasse a farsi più latente: così nell'autunno del '73 Mr. Zimmerman e il gruppo capeggiato da Robbie Robertson si univano per incidere il nuovo album del cantautore, il discreto "Planet Waves", memorabile per la presenza di pezzi come "Going, Going, Gone" e soprattutto le due versioni di "Forever Young": nel complesso comunque poco più che un pretesto per andare in tour.
Puntuale, al nascere del nuovo anno viene annunciato il "Bob Dylan and The Band 1974 Tour", dal quale viene tratto materiale per un doppio album: la versione in Lp è perfetta per comprendere la divisione dello show nelle sue quattro parti. La prima, con Dylan e The Band uniti a suonare pezzi del menestrello di Duluth, comincia con le scatenate versioni dei bluesettoni "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" e "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35", per poi rallentare sotto le note di "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" e della monumentale "Ballad Of A Thin Man".
La seconda parte vede la sola Band proporre i suoi classici, perlopiù tratti dai primi album, che non si discostano particolarmente dalle (stupende) versioni in studio; la terza comincia col solo Dylan all'acustica e prosegue con la Band a suonare altre canzoni in proprio (provenienti ancora dai primi tre dischi della carriera), tra cui la solita riuscitissima "The Weight". Chiusura col botto nel secondo lato dell'ultimo Lp, nel quale i protagonisti congiungono nuovamente le forze per gli ultimi quattro classici tratti dal repertorio di Zimmerman: "All Along The Watchtower" e "Highway 61 Revisited" hanno una carica esplosiva, mentre una "Like A Rolling Stone" arricchita dal corposo suono di The Band ma piuttosto fedele all'originale fa da preludio alla conclusiva "Blowin In The Wind", vestita rispetto alla originaria versione acustica dal caldo suono dei musicisti coinvolti.
Già insieme nel celebre tour elettrico del 1966 e nelle ricchissime "The Basement Tapes", Dylan & The Band sono un marchio di fabbrica su cui fare sicuro affidamento. Provare per credere.
