Probabilmente sarete stanchi dei doppioni, ma volevo cominciare la mia carrieria debaseriana recensendo quello che è il mio disco del cuore.
Un disco che non oserei definire "nu metal", ma qualcosa di molto più vario e complesso da descrivere.
La furia dei 4 di Sacramento (più la new entry di Frank Delgado) brucia ancora in episodi come "Feiticeira", "Elite" e "Korea" ma si lascia spazio a una calma più introspettiva, già sperimentata dal gruppo nel loro precedente album con "Be Quiet And Drive".
Il vertice artistico di "Digital Bath" non verrà mai più toccato nelle prossime produzioni della band, un pezzo dal ritmo sensuale, la voce tiepida e avvolgente con una chitarra che prima ti accarezza e poi ti squarcia la gola e al posto del sangue lascia scorrere un flusso di pensieri e di emozioni.
Già, emozioni, perchè in quest' album se ne vivono tante, tutte raccontate in maniera impeccabile, come la triste storia d'amore di "Rx Queen" o i nostalgici episodi dell'adolescenza di Chino Moreno in "Street Carp" e "Teenager", dove in quest'ultima sono presenti notevoli spunti trip-hop.
"Knife Party" è una canzone soporifera, non perchè noiosa, bensì magica. Una spirale di fumo e note ci culla, non in un bel letto morbido e caldo, ma in mezzo a un pavimento sporco e lercio mentre verso la fine della canzone le acrobazie vocali di Chino trasportano la nostra mente in un altro luogo, una macchina stavolta.
Sei insieme alla persona che ami e due voci spingono la tua testa come su un'altalena. L'adrenalina sale, non riesci più a frenare i tuoi desideri ed esplodi nel ritornello, urlato da un Maynard James Keenan fuori controllo, placato da un dolce outro di pianoforte. Questa era "Passenger".
Ritornano la pace e la malinconia e la stanza si tinge di grigio. Le melodie soffocate di "Change" proiettano una particolare sequenza in questa stanza grigia: un cavallo bianco che galoppa spensierato in mezzo a questo spazio apparentemente infinito, sembra quasi prendere vita.
Anche questa sequenza alla fine si dissolve, per dare spazio all'ultimo regalo dei Deftones.
Parlo di "Pink Maggit", la perla che chiude il disco: arpeggi distorti e altri ricordi che riemergono dal passato che esplodono in un big bang musicale.
"Pushed back to square now that you kneed her in the throat, well there you go. 'Cause back to school we are the leaders of all".
L'opera certamente non merita cinque stelle (o pallini), ma per me quest' album significa troppo.
