Circa 3 anni dopo l'uscita della loro ultima grande impresa "Scenes From A Memory", i Dream Theater tornano con un nuovo album comprendente 2 cd, ovvero il poco apprezzato "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence". Appena seppi della sua uscita corsì immediatamente ad ascoltarlo, sperando che mi sarei trovato di fronte ad un nuovo capolavoro come il disco precedente, invece rimasi un po' deluso dell'ascolto, tuttavia non si può dire che questo sia un album inascoltabile, anzi, io alcune traccie le ho trovate piuttosto interessanti.
Il primo cd, contenente 5 canzoni inizia con un lungo fruscio che si riallaccia al finale di "Finally free" in Metropolis Pt.2. Da qui la situazione si evolve lentamente partendo con dei rintocchi di campana a cui poi si sovrappone un armonioso arpeggio di chitarra che crea un atmosfera molto intrigante. Ad un tratto degli accordi devastanti di chitarra a 7 corde invadono questa atmosfera trasformando questa melodiosa introduzione in una canzone aggressiva ed energica: questa è "The Glass prison". La traccia successiva è "Blind faith", pezzo calmo e rilassante, ma allo stesso tempo anche movimentato soprattutto quando Petrucci parte con i suoi lick fenomenali. "Misunderstood" è un brano molto particolare con un ritornello fantastico che ti rimane in testa per giorni e giorni grazie alla calda voce di Labrie. La canzone successiva è "The Great Debate" che parla dei fatti accaduti durante la caduta delle torri gemelle nell'11 settembre 2001. Il brano, a mio parere, è il meno trascinante dell'album e a volte mi risulta difficile anche ascoltarlo per intero. Ed ecco l'ultimo pezzo del cd, la stupenda "Disappear". Inizia con una sequenza di accordi di piano del grande Jordan Rudess che fa salire i brividi lungo la schiena già al primo ascolto. Da qui nasce una strofa melodica ed armoniosa resa inimitabile sempre dalla soave voce del cantante. Così termina il primo cd di "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence".
Il secondo disco contiene una sola canzone lunga 42 minuti divisa in 8 atti. I atto: "Overture" è un introduzione strumentale tipica ormai dei D.T. che raccoglie tutta l'enfasi di questo interminabile brano anche se presenta ogni tanto degli intermezzi in cui faccio fatica a credere che li abbiano inventati davvero loro. Il cd entra nel vivo nel secondo atto, cioè "About To Crash", brano orecchiabile e molto piacevole da ascoltare.L'atmosfera che il gruppo crea nel terzo e nel quarto atto è totalmente differente; queste 2 parti chiamate "War Inside My Head" e "The Test That Stumped Them All" sono molto più accattivanti ed energiche e mostrano la famosissima perizia tecnica dei D.T. che nessuno sa eguagliare. V atto: "Goodnight Kiss"", pezzo riposante con accordi molto melodici e linee vocali molto distensive a cui poi si collega il VI atto ovvero la splendida "Solitary Shell", canzone acustica da ascoltare e riascoltare e che termina con degli stacchi davvero impressionanti che ricordano il progressive degli anni passati. Un intrigante riff di chitarra apre il VII atto, "About To Crash(reprise)". Questo seguito del II atto si ispira ovviemente allo stesso tema. A questo punto la band chiude il lavoro con un "Gran Finale" unico nel suo stile, ricco di cori molto teatrali che lascia tirare un respiro di sollievo all'ascoltatore.
In conclusione penso che questo sia un album degno di essere acquistato, ma è anche vero che solo dopo molti ascolti si riesce a carpire la sua bellezza.

Questo „Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence“ segna una seria svolta nella musica dei Dream Theater.
Un album degno dei migliori Dream Theater, quasi alla pari dei vari „Images And Words“, „Awake“ e „Scenes From A Memory“.
