Etichettare i Dredg è davvero un gran bell’enigma. Chi li definisce nu-metal, chi un rock mischiato con il jazz, chi post-hardcore, chi li considera gli eredi di band come Genesis e Pink Floyd... Sta di fatto che dopo il magnifico "El Cielo" del 2002, tre anni dopo i Dredg producono il loro terzo album, ovvero "Catch Without Arms". Prodotto da Terry Date (non uno qualsiasi), il cd si può suddividere tranquillamente in due parti, anzi in due "prospettive" come ci tengono a dirci i Dredg; la prima è composta dalle sette tracce iniziale, la seconda dalle restanti cinque.
Analizziamo i brani: "Ode To The Sun" ci evoca qualcosa dei vecchi U2, mentre "Bug Eyes" risulta sì armoniosa, ma forse un po' troppo lineare. La title-track è un miscuglio tra Beatles, Elton John e Radiohead e, per quanto suonata bene, mi ha lasciato un po' interdetto... meglio "Not That Simple", che ci ricorda le canzoni più melodiche dei Deftones, mentre "Zebraskin" ci riporta al funky-r&b degli Incubus. "The Tanbark Is Hot Lava" è un misto tra emocore ed hardcore, così come "Hung Over On A Tuesday" ed "Uplifting News": i tre brani sono molto interessanti, ma non è che mi entusiasmano più di tanto... o meglio, non fanno gridare al miracolo. "Sang Real" si presenta con una chitarra country ed un soave pianoforte che rendono la canzone molto godibile da sentire, mentre "Planting Seeds" è abbastanza uguale a "Bug Eyes". "Spitshine" è chiaramente pop-punk (e questo non mi è andato proprio giù...), "Jamais Vu" è una traccia molto melodica e uggiosa però manca un po' di carattere, che comunque mette in risalto la voce del frontman Gavin Hayes... già meglio "Matrhoska", una ballata molto più serena. Che dire di quest’album? I Dredg necessitano di molti ascolti per essere apprezzati, ma vi dirò: il primo album, "Letimotif" (2000), mi è piaciuto dopo 10 ascolti circa, il maestoso "El Cielo" dopo 2 ascolti e basta, mentre "Catch Without Arms", per meritarsi il 3 pieno pieno ha avuto bisogno, da parte mia, di una cinquantina d’ascolti... il difetto maggiore è che i Dredg, invece di continuare nel loro personale stile, siano passanti ad uno schema più pop-rock... e quest’ultima parola mi spaventa molto.
Con questo però non voglio dire che l’album sia una cavolata, anzi. Prodotto bene, c’è molta cura prestata sia nelle parti vocali che strumentali ed anche qualche canzone molto interessante, anche se più di 3 (od al limite 3 e mezzo), a mio avviso non si merita... Vabbè, viva i gusti!!!

Originalità, sensibilità ed un'evoluzione coerente sono ciò che distingue i Dredg.
I suoni balzano e si alternano sulle due vie delle mie Bose senza alcun punto di riferimento: un inseguimento perenne tra il mio timpano e il pentagramma che scorre liquido e veloce.

C'è un solo aggettivo per definire questo disco degli americani Dredg, 'Catch Without Arms', ed è SORPRENDENTE.
Un disco straordinario e unico nella sua capacità di comunicare emozioni.
