A metà degli anni 80 l'avido Phil Collins, preoccupato per le spese per il suo dodicesimo divorzio e per la fornitura annuale di Minoxidil (noto farmaco anti-calvizie), decise di pubblicare l'album più sfacciatamente commerciale della storia dei Genesis.
A tal scopo si procurò del potente narcotico e subdolamente lo somministrò sciolto in una pinta di birra ai suoi due compari al pub. Gli ignari Tony e Mike, reduci dall'aver appena composto i capolavori progressive "The fugitive" e "Mike and the mechanics", piombarono in un sonno profondo per un buon mese. Subito l'astuto Phil, coadiuvato dal fido produttore Hugh, si mise all'opera, componendo e suonando (tutti gli strumenti erano campionati) da solo l'intero album.
Nel giro di pochi giorni scrisse "Invisible touch", "Land of confusion", "Throwing it all away" e "In too deep", 4 fra le canzoni più facili pubblicate dai Genesis... che immediatamente raggiunsero i primi posti nella classifica dei singoli! Completato velocemente l'album con altri brani non certo esaltanti (come lo strumentale "Brasilian", basato perlopiù su effettacci sonori o la pesante "Tonight tonight"), a Phil venne un dubbio di coscienza e cominciò a chiedersi se per caso aveva un pò esagerato con semplicità e immediatezza... A questo punto si scomodò l'Arcangelo Peter Gabriel, pur occupatissimo nel comporre le altamente sperimentali "Sledgehammer" e "Big Time". Scese dall'Eden, comparve in sogno a Phil e gli ispirò l'idea della mini-suite "Domino", l'unica canzone memorabile di "Invisible touch".
Nel frattempo, a disco ormai pubblicato, si svegliarono dal torpore Tony e Mike, che a malincuore accettarono la scadente qualità dell'opera. Si consolarono con le vendite astronomiche e con i milioni di spettatori del successivo tour; non ditelo a Tony, ma quegli spettatori erano solo dei figuranti pagati generosamente da Peter Gabriel per evitare una brutta figura ai vecchi amici.
PS: un'ultima indiscrezione. Nell'ottimo strumentale "Do The Neurotic" (colpevolmente relegato al ruolo di b-side), Phil segretamente commissionò al mercenario Steve Hackett l'esecuzione delle parti di chitarra.

Invisible Touch si erge come un monumento granitico al peggior sound degli ottanta.
Consigliato a chi ha soldi da buttare o ottimisti radicali che ripongono nei Genesis una fiducia ai limiti dell'impossibile.

Il peggior disco dei Genesis ha ben poco di salvabile.
Se non si trattasse di Genesis, il disco non sarebbe forse, dico forse, poi così male.

Invisible Touch è il paradigma di un disco divertente e gradevole senza pretese, ma mediocre artisticamente.
In confronto Invisible Touch dei terribili anni 80 brilla come oro.
